The Monte Cetona is a mountain in Tuscany in Italy .

location

The mountain is located about 70 km southeast of Siena near the municipality of Cetona in the province of Siena , halfway between Florence and Rome , and at 1148 m it is the highest point in the Chiana Valley . It is part of the Apennines and is surrounded by the Chiana Valley and the Val d'Orcia . Other neighboring communities besides Cetona are San Casciano dei Bagni , Radicofani and Sarteano . The Orcia River arises on the southern slope and later flows into the Ombrone .

archeology

The first archaeological work was carried out in 1927 by the archaeologist Umberto Calzoni from Perugia . The Grotta di San Francesco and the Grotta della Carbonaia were discovered and uncovered. In 1928 the Antro della Noce , Antro del Poggetto and the Tombetta della Strada , an interconnected cave system, were discovered and excavated. These caves were first inhabited by the Neanderthals , later in the Bronze Age and the Neolithic Age . The excavations of the Calzoni took place until 1941. In 1984 the University of Siena and the Soprintendenza Archeologica per la Toscana resumed research.
