The Monts de Toulx-Sainte-Croix represent a small part of the massif within the Monts de la Marche with low mountain character. They are located in the northwest corner of the French massif central .

etymology

The Monts de Toulx-Sainte-Croix are named after the municipality of Toulx-Sainte-Croix .

geography

The Monts de Toulx-Sainte-Croix are located in the north of the Creuse department south of Boussac . They extend over 22 kilometers in an east-west direction, but are only about 4 kilometers wide across the strike. They reach their highest height of 656 meters in the Butte de Toulx on their eastern edge. To the west, the massif gradually loses height until it finally ends at the Gorges d'Anzême on the Creuse .

In addition to the Butte de Toulx , the following surveys are to be cited:

  • Bois de Toulx - 627 meters
  • Les Buiges de la Boissatte - 611 meters
  • Puy Chabot - 601 meters
  • Mont Barlot - 591 meters

In addition to the already mentioned Toulx-Sainte-Croix, the municipality of Saint-Silvain-sous-Toulx , with Saint-Silvain-Bas-le-Roc , Domeyrot and Clugnat as a subordinate, has a primary share in the Monts de Toulx-Sainte-Croix .

Often the Monts de Toulx-Sainte-Croix are not viewed as a separate massif, but rather included in the chain of the Monts de la Marche in a restrictive sense. The Monts de la Marche in the restrictive sense run from Montluçon in the east to almost La Souterraine in the west.

Hydrography

The Monts de Toulx-Sainte-Croix are drained to the east and north by the Petite Creuse , which drains to the northwest to the Creuse . Left tributaries of the Petite Creuse are the Verraux in the west of the massif and the Ruisseau de Champeix in the center . The catchment area of the Voueize - a left tributary of the Tardes - drains the south and southeast of the massif , which then flows into the Cher .

geology

The Monts de Toulx-Sainte-Croix belong geologically to the basement of the northwestern Massif Central . They are mainly made up of the Toulx-Sainte-Croix granite , which penetrated into the migmatitic Aubusson anatexite in the Upper Carboniferous . In the south, the massif is cut off by the east-south-east trending Marche-Combrailles shear zone opposite the Guéret granite . In the north, the Toulx-Sainte-Croix granite is intruded by the Saint-Silvain granite . The Saint-Silvain granite has even penetrated the east-trending Marche shear zone that bounds the massif to the north . Noteworthy is the extensive albitization that went hand in hand with the leveling of the Variscan Orogen from the Permian . Albitization was particularly effective in the Triassic and changed the future considerably.

geomorphology
