The Moosbach is an approximately 4 km long, southeast flowing brook in the municipality of Mainhardt in the district of Schwäbisch Hall in northern Baden-Württemberg , which flows from the left at the Mainhardter grape mill into the local Mühlkanal to the left of the Fichtenberger Rot .
Surname
On the longer upper section, the stream, like its right source branch, is called Moosbach , and on the lower section it is called Sägmühlebach . The official river map lists it as Sägmühlebach (Moosbach) .
geography
Source and history
The Moosbach flows next to the B 14 in the local area of Mainhardt at about 486 m above sea level. NHN the Lammsee and flows in a straightened course first through a very flat meadow hollow of the Gewanns Hanfsee in an east- south- east direction.
After about 0.5 km it is crossed by a paved dirt road that follows the route of the former Limes . Then it turns slightly to the southeast and flows between two touching pieces of forest, the right of which is also called Moosbach . Immediately afterwards his right source branch , also called Moosbach , reaches him in a damp meadow hollow. Soon a dirt road crosses it again, it is now developing a more strongly profiled valley basin and takes on another ditch inflow from the left towards Bäumlesfeld, after which it enters a hollow forest that continues to accompany it at least on one side and after a little over 1.5 km the 0.8 ha large Töbelsee flows through it. Another tributary from the Buchwald reaches it from the right . After almost 2.5 km he passes the Württemberger Hof group of farms , which is sitting on a small platform on his left. Here the K 2587 enters the valley from the right over a small path and then crosses it to the west towards the hamlet of Mönchsberg . After almost three kilometers, it feeds another, smaller pond. The Moosbach is now deepened almost 40 m compared to the surrounding plateau, the accompanying forest now stretches out of its hollow on both sides up to the ridges, on the right is the Schlüsselhart forest , on the left is the Brenntenholz forest . From here he is called Sägmühlebach himself . After a little over 3.5 km below its origin, the Krebsbächle flows into it from the left , its longest constantly water-bearing tributary. After a total of 4.0 km it reaches the valley basin of the Fichtenberger Rot from the left at the Mainhardter grape mill and flows out at about 395 m above sea level. NHN into the Mühlkanal on the left there, which immediately bends in the direction of the Moosbach and flows back about a hundred meters further into the Fichtenberger Rot .
Catchment area
The Moosbach has a catchment area of 4.9 km², which is naturally located entirely in the lower area of the Hinterer Mainhardt Forest of the Swabian-Franconian Forest Mountains . Being at about 499 m above sea level. NHN highest point is on the northern watershed at the water tower south of Mainhardt- Stock .
Beyond this most important watershed, which stretches some distance to the south of the B 14 from near the Lammsee in Mainhardt in the west to a little after the water tower, the Brettach drains the other slope to the lower Kocher . The subsequent north-eastern watershed runs through Maingardt-Hütten and runs into the forest around the Winkelberg , the area outside there is drained from the Rötenbach below the Moosbach to the Fichtenberger Rot , which feeds the middle cooker.
In the southeast between the Rötenbach and Moosbach estuaries there are no significant tributaries to the Rot outside. Above the Moosbach estuary, the Kümmelsbach competes with it in the southwest . In the north-east, finally, again in the local area of Mainhardt, the Stammbach leads the drain on the other side even higher to the Fichtenberger Rot.
Both the brook and its catchment area lie entirely in the area of the municipality of Mainhardt, the majority in the Hüttener district; only the extreme northwest lies on the Mainhardt district.

The stream is 4.0 km long and has a 4.9 km² catchment area.
Localities
The Moosbach only runs for the first few hundred meters in the soft area of Mainhardt (Waspenhof and Neuwirtshaus settlement areas). Thereafter the valley basin is free of settlements up to the mouth at the grape mill. The Württemberger Hof is located to the right above the upper left edge of the valley; it and all other villages that drain the Moosbach are part of the Hütten subdivision; these are a part of Hütten themselves and the smaller settlement areas Bäumlesfeld and Zimmerhaus.
geology
The Moosbach begins its course in the Stubensandstein ( Löwenstein Formation ) and remains in it for more than half of its course until about the Württemberger Hof. There it reaches the Upper Bunten Marl ( Mainhardt Formation ), from about the smaller lake down the valley the silica sandstone ( Hassberge Formation ). Soon he changes to the lower colored marl ( Steigerwald formation ). From the tributary of the Krebsbächles to the mouth of the valley in the Rottal, clods of slippery clods lie on both sides of the slopes.
At the mouth of the Krebsbächle, the same layers follow one another up to the confluence, while the previous tributaries and the predominant part of the catchment area lie in the Stubensandstein. In the area of the Töbelsee a disturbance in the basin line of the brook flowing out of the Buchwald is suspected.
nature and environment
landscape
The Moosbach flows in the upper reaches through a flat and damp meadow hollow, initially accompanied on the left by an industrial area, in which later forest tongues sometimes extend to the shore. At the middle course it lies in a small valley trough that fills the gallery forest. Below the Württemberger Hof he enters a closed forest area as Klingenbach.
In the catchment area, the open land predominates, which is divided into two islands by the central forest area around the beech forest . In the smaller north-western on the south-eastern edge of Mainhardt there are almost only meadows, in the larger one around huts in the east these predominate less clearly than the fields. In the north on a small ridge running east from the water tower (district name Alte Äcker ) you can find many fields, to the south around Bäumlesfeld and further south between the Württemberger Hof in the west and huts in the east.
In the forests of the central catchment area, such as those on both sides of the lower reaches, the coniferous forest dominates, followed by the mixed forest; pure deciduous forest hardly occurs at all.
Protected areas
At the right source branch , also called Moosbach , between the Moosbach forest in the north and Buchwald in the south, the right half of the hollow is a litter meadow (lean meadow) under biotope protection and is a natural monument; a hollow running from the Buchwald to the west of the Limes line is a wet biotope. There is also a small swamp in the hallway nearby. At the southeastern tip of the larger forest area to the left of the creek between the Töbelsee in the south and the B 14 in the north, a few ares of large forest ponds including the inflow coming from the northeast are protected as a biotope.
At the mouth of the Moosbach and Töbelsee , around 0.7 hectares of quarry forest are under biotope protection, and roughly the same area is also a natural monument. Further down the valley there are 2.4 hectares from the Württemberger Hof to the pond, about 0.5 km below the Bachauenwald. The valley floor in the Keuperklinge down from this pond in the closed Klingenwald as well as the forest section of the approaching Krebsbächles have the largest area of all areas under biotope protection in the catchment area with a total of 5 hectares. There is a protected orchid meadow at the southern tip of Hütten.
To the left of the upper reaches there is mostly a water protection area in the forest. The entire catchment area belongs to the Swabian-Franconian Forest Nature Park .
