occupation

Murder in the Medici House is a German documentary drama about the most powerful dynasty in Italy. The authors Judith Voelker and Alexander Hogh bring the times of the Medici Grand Dukes of Tuscany to life in documentary sequences and scenic reconstructions in the two-part docu-drama . The documentary was produced in 2013 by Gebrüder Beetz Filmproduktion in coproduction with ZDF and ORF and in collaboration with ARTE . On February 16, 2013, the docu-drama was broadcast on ARTE for the first time. At the same time, the results of the research were presented in the exhibition of the Reiss Engelhorn museums .

action

The docu-drama specifically picks out two episodes from the 16th century. Historians, forensic doctors and bioarchaeologists comment on the era in which the descendants of Cosimo the Elder and Lorenzo the Magnificent had long since risen from the Florentine bourgeoisie to rulers of Tuscany and married into the leading royal houses in Europe.

Portraits trace the fates of selected family members, especially the children of Cosimo de 'Medici. The film assembles documentary elements and scenic representations. He also deals with three previously unsolved murder cases.

The experts are particularly interested in the search for the identity of five unknown female skeletons from the family crypt of the Medici bones, which so far could not be assigned to any historical personalities. The film shows the gene analysis and facial reconstruction that is supposed to provide the scientific evidence for identification.

TV reviews

  • The Heilbronn voice emphasizes that the focus of the documentation is on the exhumation of the bones of the deceased and their examination.
  • The press criticizes that "the far too short play scenes", which are accompanied by "too dramatic music", would not harmonize with the "far too long researcher interviews".
