Mordechay Lewy (born May 15, 1948 ) is an Israeli diplomat and historian .

Life

Lewy grew up in Tiberias . In 1958 he and his family moved to Berlin , where his father worked as a doctor at the Jewish Hospital . In 1963 the family returned to Israel and settled in Jerusalem . After Lewy finished school in 1966, he completed his military service in the Israeli armed forces from 1966 to 1969 . From 1970 to 1976 he studied Medieval Studies at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and received a bachelor's and master's degree.

Lewy entered the diplomatic service of the Israeli Foreign Ministry. His first post brought him to Germany , where he worked at the Israeli embassy in Bonn from 1976 to 1981 , first as second secretary, then later as first secretary. During his further diplomatic career, from 1985 to 1989 he was first secretary, later counselor, at the Israeli embassy in Stockholm , from 1991 to 1994 consul general in Berlin, and then from 1994 to 1997 Israeli ambassador to Thailand with simultaneous accreditation as a non-resident Ambassador for Cambodia . In 1998 he was a member of the Israeli delegation to the United Nations General Assembly in New York . From 2000 to 2004 Lewy worked again in Germany, this time at the new Israeli embassy in Berlin. In May 2008 he became the Israeli ambassador to the Holy See . Its successor, Zion Evrony , was introduced in 2012.

After leaving as a diplomat , Lewy did his doctorate at the Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main with a historical thesis on a migration of motifs from early Islamic literature to Christian recuperatio literature after the Crusaders were expelled from the Holy Land in 1291.

Lewy is married and has three children. In addition to Hebrew , he is fluent in English , German and Italian .
