Moroni ([ moˈroːni ], Arabic موروني, DMG Mūrūnī ) is the capital and with 111,329 inhabitants (2013) the largest city of the Comoros .
The city is located on the west coast of the island of Njazidja , which is also known by the French name Grande Comore .
history
Moroni may have been founded by Arab settlers during the 10th century . In the 15th century the city experienced a boom as Arabs and Persians settled in the city and made Moroni a regional trading center. Moroni was the capital of the Sultanate of Bambao , which became part of the united state of Ngazidja in 1886. Moroni has been the capital of the Comoros since 1962. On December 20, 2003, after the civil war in the Comoros, an agreement was signed in Moroni that stipulates free and democratic elections. Near the city is the Karthala volcano , which has been active 20 times since the beginning of the 19th century. The last major outbreaks occurred in April 2005 and May 2016 . In 2005, more than 40,000 people were evacuated in and around Moroni, considering the danger posed by lava flows and volcanic gases. Another Karthala eruption occurred in May 2006, as a result of which a cloud of dust and smoke formed and covered Moroni. This outbreak also led to local evacuations.
The city had around 23,400 inhabitants in 1990 and around 60,200 in 2003.
Infrastructure
Moroni has an international airport , Prince Said Ibrahim International Airport . Near the city center is also located the small airfield Moroni Iconi .
In Moroni there is the Stade de Beaumer , the former national stadium of the Comoros, as well as one of two Catholic church buildings on the Islamic Comoros. The Comoros Parliament , the Central Bank and all ministries and services of the Union have their seat in the city. The University of the Comoros is also located in Moroni. In the Musée National des Comores is u. a. the coelacanth ( Latimeria chalumnae ), called Kombessa in Comorian, from the sensational find of 1952 on display.
Another defining building in the city is the Mausouleum Abdallahs, which commemorates the President of the Comoros, Ahmed Abdallah , who was murdered by a French mercenary on November 20, 1989.

Moroni has a port with shipping connections to the African mainland and the other Comorian islands, Mwali (French Mohéli ) and Nzwani (French Anjouan ) as well as Madagascar and other island states. The port is also popular with tourists, as there is a lot of activity on the port area. Ships are loaded and unloaded using a large number of motorless boats, so-called boutries.

Moroni has a tropical rainforest climate . The annual precipitation is 2,700 mm. Especially in the monsoon season between November and April there is a lot of precipitation. The October with 97 of the driest mm months of the year .
