Mors (also Morsø or Morsland ) is an island in the Limfjord in northern Jutland . In the west and east it can be reached via bridges, in the north and south by ferry connections. The highest point (Salgerhøj) is 89  m high. Similar to the neighboring island Fur Mors has occurrence of Moler .

The main town on the island is Nykøbing Mors . It is the administrative seat of the municipality of Morsø . The island is 363.31 km² in size. During the Danish municipal reform on January 1, 2007 , the municipality, which besides Morsø also includes a few smaller islands such as Agerø , remained untouched, but now belongs to the Nordjylland region instead of the Viborg Amt .

The population decreased from 25,029 to 20,217 between 1970 and 2020.

Natural monuments

  • Legind / Højris
  • The Hanklit is a 62 m high rock on the island of Mors. It consists of moler, which is covered by meltwater deposits from the Weichselian period. At the foot of the cliff you can find fossils from the Cretaceous (e.g. petrified sea urchins and sponges), but they do not come from the moler of the cliff.
  • At 89  m, Salgjerhøj is the highest point on the island of Mors
  • Feggeklit is a ridge about 25 meters high and one kilometer long on the north side of the island. The name goes back to King Fegge, a figure in Danish legends who also appears in Shakespeare's Hamlet (Hamlet's stepfather and uncle). Fegge is said to have lived in a castle here with his brother Horvendel. The place where the tomb of this king should be is marked with stones. However, archaeological evidence of the existence of a burial site at this location has not yet been found. The hill has been a listed building since 1963.

Culture

  • The headquarters of the History Museum (Morslands Historiske Museum) is located in Dueholm Monastery in Nykøbing.
  • Jesperhus Blomsterpark is Scandinavia's largest flower park, there are tropical plants, butterflies, fish, amphibians and birds on display. A holiday center with overnight accommodation, swimming pool and bowling alley is connected.
  • Højriis Castle, south of Nykøbing, dates back to a medieval complex and was given its present form in the 19th century.

Primærrute 26 leads across the island, which connects Mors to the Sallingsundbroen with the Salling peninsula in the south and Vilsundbroen to Thy in the north .
