Morsal Obeidi

Morsal Obeidi (born September 7, 1991 in Mazar-e Sharif ; † May 15, 2008 in Hamburg ) was a German youth of Afghan origin, whose murder at the age of 16 by her own brother and previously suffering from violent relatives caused an international stir excited. The motive for this so-called honor killing was stated to be that the girl had come too close to the “western way of life ”. Morsal was a Tajik woman from northern Afghanistan and her father in the Afghan military .

Life

Before her death, Morsal Obeidi had attended the Ernst-Henning-Strasse school , a primary, secondary and secondary school in Hamburg-Bergedorf . She was buried in the Öjendorf cemetery.

aftermath

On February 13, 2009, the Hamburg Regional Court sentenced her 24-year-old brother Ahmad to life imprisonment for murder . The court saw both maliciousness and other base motives as characteristics of the murder. The court considered it proven that Ahmad lured his sister to a personal meeting on May 15, 2008 in the Hamburg district of St. Georg and killed her there on the street with more than 20 stab wounds. The judgment is final after confirmation by the Federal Court of Justice in November 2009 . Before the murder, Ahmad had long been known to the police and judiciary as an intensive offender .

After the verdict was announced, the convict and other family members protested loudly. A vigil by the women's rights organization Terre des Femmes in front of the courthouse was attacked. The prosecution brought charges against Morsal's father of ill-treatment of wards . On February 20, 2009, the public prosecutor's office initiated a preliminary investigation into the convicted Ahmad Obeidi for insult , as he had insulted the public prosecutor as a “ son of a bitch ” after the verdict had been pronounced .

The prosecutor also received anonymous death threats. The defender Thomas Bliwier said on February 16th 2009, he had resigned his seat for Ahmad Obeidi. On the same day, the remaining other defense counsel appealed against the judgment.
