Mortuary is a French thrash and death metal band from Nancy that was founded in 1989 under the name Total Dead .

history

The band was formed in 1988 after bassist Jean-Noël Verbecq (ex-Traktor, ex-Wolfen) and singer Patrick Germonville (ex-Sleuth Eyes) met at a concert. They were joined by guitarist Gilles Pincet (ex-Wolfen); first rehearsals took place at the end of 1988. In March 1989, Jean Paul Gralak and Guy Pommet joined the band. In this line-up, Rejected by Death ... was recorded with a cassette recorder. From 1990 the band came into contact with Mercyless, Aleister and Shud and was noticed in the French underground . In March 1990 the band played the 8-track demo recording Below the Marble in two days in the Audigraf studio in Nancy , which was recorded in Nancy, on French fanzines and radio stations, but also on the Chilean Brutal Zine , the US American Metal Pages and the Yugoslav No Name Magazine was well received. In July 1992, after Pincet's departure to found the band Depraved, a few concerts in France and the creation of six new pieces, the 16-track demo recording In Harmony With Brutality was created . The band also gave their first concert in Belgium with God Dethroned and Spithead. Jean Serge Kuhn (ex-Dr Mezcal) became Mortuary's new guitarist. In order to get a record deal, the band prepared another recording with this line-up. Pommet left Mortuary in 1993; he was replaced by Yves Chateaux. With this line-up, The Mortified Faces was created in 1994 in the Amper studio in Clouange with Jean Pascal Boffo. In addition to numerous other concerts, the band performed at a festival in Ludwigshafen am Rhein together with Vibrion from Argentina and Mangled from the Netherlands. Gralak left the band in 1994 for personal reasons, which the band described as a great loss; it had not found an equivalent replacement, which is why it was continued with four members. After further appearances and the composition of new tracks, the band met the guitarist Alexis Baudin, who joined them. In addition, they separated from Kuhn, because he lacked motivation, so the band returned to the four-person lineup. In this she worked on the realization of her debut album Hazards of Creation , which was recorded in November 1995 in the Triangle studio in Augny ; since the band had no serious contact with a record company, it was self-released. Due to consistent promotion, the band came into contact with numerous record companies, fanzines and radio stations. She also gave numerous concerts with Obituary , Coroner , SUP and Agressor, among others .

In 1997, guitarist Christophe De La Fuente, trained at the Nancy Music School, joined Mortuary and the band came into contact with Thunder Productions; the operator Jean-Hervé Crepot took the band under contract, whereupon they composed twelve new tracks for the album Eradicate . This was recorded in Brussels under the direction of Bruno Donini ( Loudblast , SUP). The title Killing Waves was also published in July 1998 on a compilation of the French magazine Hard Rock . The band gave again numerous concerts among others with Krabathor .

In 1999 the band lost their record label when it ceased operations, and Christophe De La Fuente and Jean-Yves Chateaux got out. The remaining members continued the band and met the guitarist Christophe Touly. In addition, the record company Pavement Music Mortuary for three albums under contract and gave her an international distribution. The band lacked a drummer, however; several rehearsals were unsuccessful until she came across Dirk Verbeuren (including Scarve , Soilwork , Aborted ).

In 2001 the Mortuarys contract was terminated by Pavement Music. The band recorded at the Atomic Art Studios Agony in Red . The album was released in 2003 via Anvil Corp., followed by the re-release of their first two albums in 2004 with Welcome to the Morgue . Drummer Verbeuren left the band and was replaced by Gaël Feret ( Misanthrope , Triple Effect), guitarist Paul Perrin replaced Touly.

In 2005 Agony in Red was distributed in Russia via CD-Maximum . The band also began work on the album GOD , and a three-track promo was made to get a new record deal. In April 2007, Johann Valleck joined the line-up as the new drummer, so that further concerts followed from September. In the summer of 2009 the band recorded their next album called GOD . The album was released in 2010 through Pervade Productions .

style

The band cites "all the music by lunatics, psychopaths and other crazy people that rocked our youth" as influences. Agony in Red is called their most brutal release by Mortuary. Below the Marble includes a piece that was recorded for fun and as a tribute to the Bee Gees . From In Harmony With Brutality the music increasingly contained death metal influences. With Jean Serge Kuhn and his more developed guitar style, the band got an additional impulse in 1992, while with Yves Chateaux the rhythm of the band changed; The same applies to the trained guitarist Christophe De La Fuente. After Eradicate came out , the metal press compared the band to Immolation , Malevolent Creation and Gorguts . metal-observer.com describes the playing of the drums on Agony in Red as "insane" and the chords as "insanely fast", which leads to a "controlled chaos" overall. Most of the songs would be based on songs by Nasum or Origin and less on pure Thrash Metal bands.
