The Motte Wiebershausen , also called Motte Niederscherf , is a small defunct tower castle (Motte) near the farm Niederscherf in the municipality of Odenthal in the Rheinisch-Bergisches Kreis in North Rhine-Westphalia .

description

The castle complex is located in the swampy Scherfbachtal , about 100 meters southeast of the Niederscherf farm and 250 meters northeast of the hamlet of Wiebershausen . The castle hill, which is just under two meters high, has a diameter of a good 25 meters. It is surrounded by an extensive wall and ditch system, which suggests a bailey in the east.

The design as a small, simple hilltop castle with a wooden tower and few ceramic finds refer to the 11th or 12th century as the time of origin.

The moth probably represents the older knight seat of the Lords of Scherf. The family was first mentioned in 1216. Knight Lambert de Scherve belonged to Count Adolf III two years later . of Berg's followers in the Fifth Crusade .

The knight's seat was probably moved to the Burghaus Amtmannscherf on the upper reaches of the Scherfbach in the late Middle Ages .

The moth hill is entered under No. 5 in the list of archaeological monuments in Odenthal .
