geography

location

The Motzküppel rises in the Rhön Biosphere Reserve ; Parts of the Hessian Rhön Nature Park extend to its eastern flank . The boundary to the district of Dietershausen , located northeast of the mountain, of the municipality of Künzell runs almost 300 m northwest of the summit. To the south, the landscape drops over its foothills Fuldaer Berg ( 428.1  m ) to Lütter , to which a tributary swelling east of the elevation in the transition area to the north-northeastern Lebersberg ( 472.7  m ) and flowing through Weyhers strives. To the north-north-west, the landscape flows over another tributary of the Lütter, which runs to the south-west, to the Dassenberg ( 459  m ), 820 m (as the crow flies ) .

Mountain description

The Motzküppel is an extinct volcano made of phonolite rock . It stands relatively exposed as the only elevation in a small area above the Lüttertal. Much of the mountain was removed when it was used as a quarry. Steeper places are bushed. Where possible, the mountain consists of grassland that is grazed . At the edge of a pasture fence there is a bench with a table as a resting place for visitors. Hof Mittelreppig 1 , about 1 km (as the crow flies) to the northeast , which belongs to the district of Weyhers, used to have Motzküppel as its address ; In 1895 seven people lived there.

Quarry

In 1898 the owner at the time, a farmer from Weyhers, sold the Motzküppel to a building contractor from Dietershausen. He set up a quarry for the extraction of basalt stone . Until after 1914 only hammer, crowbar and shovel were used. Later a crusher operated by a steam engine was also in operation. The stones were transported to the next paved road by lorries , where they were loaded onto horse-drawn vehicles and then transported to the Rhön Railway . It is not known when the dismantling stopped. In the 1960s, basalt gravel was once again briefly extracted by blasting . This was only used to build roads in Weyhers.

Opportunities for viewing

The Motzküppel offers good views in many directions - however, the slightly higher Dassenberg in the north-north-west, the Lebersberg in the north-north-east and the higher east-north-east mountains with the Giebelrain ( 587.6  m ) obstruct the view somewhat. For example, the view from the mountain to the south-east falls across Weyhers to the Ebersberg ( 689  m ).

Traffic and walking

To the south past the Motzküppel runs along the Lütter between Weyhers and Lütter, the state road  3307, which in Weyhers crosses the L 3258 leading from there - east past the mountain - north towards Dietershausen. For example, starting on these roads, the elevation can be hiked on dirt roads.
