history
Moxee was first settled in 1867 by Mortimer Thorp and some French-Canadian farmers. A hot spring at Thorp Ranch emitted steam year-round and never froze. It was known to the natives as "moxee", a Sahaptin word for an edible root, and was adopted as the name for the settlement. Over time, the community was known under different names, such as "Artesian", "Moksee", "Moxie", "Moxee City" and "Moxee".
The sandy soil and mild climate of the region were ideal for growing wine and hops for beer production. By the turn of the century, the Northern Pacific Railroad had completed a nearby railway line and irrigation projects were being implemented to make abundant agricultural land available for new settlers. This attracted more and more French and French-Canadian farmers, who first immigrated to northern Minnesota and northern Michigan . A French school was established on La Framboise Road and masses were held in French in Holy Rosary Parish until the start of World War I.
On April 27, 1921, Moxee City was recognized as a city. Neighborhood street names such as Charron, Faucher, Rivard, Beaudry, Desmarais, Robillard, Beauchene, Gamache, Champoux, Morrier and St. Hilaire still reflect Moxee's French-Canadian heritage today. Today, however, a third of its residents are Hispanic descent.
