action

14-year-old Ellis and his friend Neckbone of about the same age live in a poor area on the Mississippi . One day, out of curiosity, they take their motorboat to a lonely island in the river. There they happened to meet the armed man Mud, who was on the run from the police. They learn from him that he shot a man who mistreated Mud's girlfriend Juniper. He has messages delivered to Juniper asking them to flee with him towards the Gulf of Mexico . She lives in a motel and is watched by bounty hunters who want to kill Mud and ambush him in front of the motel. Mud also has the two boys procure building materials for the repair and recommissioning of a damaged motorboat that was once stranded on the island. He also lets the two of them inform his old friend Tom that Mud is on the island. For Ellis, mud becomes a fatherly friend and role model in dealing with women. However, Ellis soon learns from Juniper and Tom that Mud was by no means as loyal to her as he claims. He feels lied to by Mud about this and confronts him on the island. When he moved away from Mud in anger, he fell into a snake pit on the island and was bitten by a snake. With Neckbone's help, Mud takes the injured Ellis to a hospital, which saves his life. However, this also makes the bounty hunters aware of Mud and Ellis. Thereupon they lie in wait, armed with rifles, Mud at the houseboat in which Ellis lives with his parents and in which Tom lives near. With Tom's help, Ellis manages to shoot the bounty hunters and flee into the river. While Ellis mourns the demolition of his houseboat, which is also necessary because of the separation of his parents, and moves to a new residential area, the shot Mud reaches the mouth of the Mississippi with Tom on the repaired motorboat.
