In Salem, Massachusetts , detective Ronan O'Connor finds himself as a ghost after he was shot by a brutal serial killer known as the "bell killer". In his new guise, Ronan meets the ghost of his late wife Julia, who informs him that he still has business to do that binds him to the world of the living. Ronan investigates his own murder case and arrives at the local church where he meets a young girl named Joy who witnessed Ronan's murder and who has the ability to see ghosts.
Joy searches for her missing mother Cassandra, who recently consulted the police about the bell killer case, and refuses to help Ronan. Shortly thereafter, Ronan frees her from the police station after being arrested for a criminal offense. In doing so, Ronan discovers that Baxter, a police officer, was the one Cassandra had contacted. Ronan and Joy go to Salem Cemetery to investigate the murder of a victim of the bell killer. Ronan learns from a young girl named Sophia, who was drowned by the bell killer, that he had asked her about a contract.
Ronan and Joy go to a mental institution where they find one of the victims of the bell killer who survived: Iris. They find out that Iris also has the gift of seeing ghosts, and they realize that the bell killer is killing media . It turns out that Iris is possessed by the ghost of her dead sister Rose, who the bell killer burned alive and who sacrificed herself to allow Iris to escape. Rose, Iris, and Joy return to the church while Ronan examines a museum exhibit revolving around the Salem witch trials . Using his ghost skills, he discovers that Baxter has apparently hidden evidence of the case in the museum. Believing Baxter to be the bell killer, Ronan leaves the museum and immediately notices police cars are driving towards the church.
Back at the church, Ronan learns that the bell killer there killed Iris and several people who stood in his way. Joy is safe, but she is arrested by Ronan's brother-in-law Rex. Upon examining the church, Ronan realizes that the bell killer is hiding in the ramshackle House of Judgment. There, Ronan finds evidence of the bell killer and clues that suggest the murders have been going on for hundreds of years. Shortly thereafter, Ronan finds Baxter's body; Baxter's ghost reveals that he was killed by the bell killer after still secretly working with Cassandra on the case after his demotion. In the basement of the house, Ronan finds out that a certain Abigail was imprisoned there before she was hanged as a punishment for witchcraft. In anger, Abigail painted a bell symbol on the floor, vowing that she would never stop ringing the bell for all the witches in Salem who she believed had contracted with demons to gain supernatural powers.
Ronan returns to the museum and finds Rex obsessed with the ghost of Abigail. While Rex prepares to hang Joy, Ronan manages to drive Rex out of Abigail's body. The two struggle with painful memories from their past that reveal Abigail possessed several people to become the bell killer before ultimately killing the killers herself, including Baxter, whom she used to kill Rose, and even Ronan, who she used to kill Sophia. Abigail calls up a demon portal to devour Ronan, but manages to escape, pulling Abigail into the portal. It is devoured by the portal before it dissolves. Joy is saved and reunited with her mother Cassandra. Rex no longer remembers the crimes he committed with his body. In the end, Ronan hears Julia calling for him and he turns to her voice.

Trivia
The character of Abigail Williams is based on a historical person who played a role in the Salem witch trials (these are taken up as a theme in the computer game).

Murdered: Soul Suspect was received mixed. Most of the criticisms focused on the weak combat system, the short length of the game, the lack of replay value and the difficulty level that was too easy. On the GameRankings and Metacritic websites , the PlayStation 4 version received 61.6% based on 18 reviews and 61/100 based on 26 reviews, the Microsoft Windows version received 60.0% based on 2 reviews and 60/100 based on 7 reviews and the Xbox One version 52.0% based on 10 reviews and 46/100 based on 9 reviews.
