The Northern Taurach (also Pongauer Taurach ) is a right tributary of the Enns . It is one of the two rivers called Taurach , both of which have their source near the Radstadt Tauern Pass , but drain in opposite directions. The two valleys that run down from the Tauern Pass are also both called Taurach Valley . Together they connect the Ennstal with the Murtal in a north-south direction.

course

The northern Taurach rises south below the Seekarspitze ( 2350  m ) mainly from the two streams Grünwald-Taurach and Hundsfeld-Taurach. The Grünwald-Taurach comes from the Krummschnabelsee just below the Seekarspitze, flows into the larger Grünwaldsee and then to Hundsfeld-Taurach. This Hundsfeld-Taurach rises partly from springs, partly from a small lake in the Seekar and flows into the Hundsfeld as a rather important stream. The two source streams unite near the Tauern cemetery in Obertauern .

The first steep step in the valley overcomes the Taurach with the Johannesfall, reaches the flattening of the valley of the Gnadenalm , overcomes another step with the Gnadenfall at the Gnadenbrücke, before it reaches the now widening valley floor near Untertauern .

The lower reaches of the Taurach have fewer tributaries than the upper reaches. Just before the Taurach reaches Radstadt , it bends sharply to the east in the Enns Valley and only flows into it at an acute angle after a few hundred meters, which it flows parallel to the Enns.

The northern Taurach is about 20 km in length, much shorter than the southern , but has to overcome the greater difference in altitude of more than 900 m.
