Extraction and presentation

N -Methylformanilid can be prepared by reaction of N -Methylanilin with formic acid in refluxing toluene , or in the oxidation of N , N -dimethylaniline with manganese (IV) oxide in chloroform are obtained.

N -methylformanilide is a flammable, hardly inflammable, colorless liquid with a characteristic odor that is sparingly soluble in water.

use

N -Methylformanilide is used as a formylating agent for certain organometallic compounds and in combination with phosphoryl chloride for Vilsmeier-Haack reactions and in heterocycle syntheses. It also acts as a swelling agent in the dyeing process of meta - aramid fibers .
