On June 1, 2005, the German television news agency wanted to start a new channel called NRW.TV with an 8-hour program. The start of the broadcast had to be postponed, however, because there were problems with the State Agency for Media in North Rhine-Westphalia . The cable network operator Unitymedia only feeds NRW.TV from 10:00 p.m. to 9:00 a.m. In autumn 2005, the daily 60-minute program “Guten Abend NRW” was also started. In the rest of the time, the program of the Cologne teleshopping channel RTL Shop ran . In December 2005, NRW.TV was recognized by the LfM as a nationwide broadcaster within the meaning of the State Media Act, which resulted in the cable network operator being obliged to feed (“must carry”). Therefore, in accordance with the administrative act, NRW.TV announced the expansion of the program from February 2006 to 16 hours of broadcasting time. This date had to be postponed due to the unresolved distribution of cable space from RTL Shop, Euronews , XXP (today DMAX ) and NRW.TV. The official start of a 12-hour program (6:00 am to 6:00 pm; DMAX was on for the rest of the time) was at the beginning of July 2006 after the cable space allocation for various broadcasters had now been resolved. On December 18, 2007, NRW.TV opened the program Extended 24 hours. Since then, the station has also been available digitally via cable.

However, in undeveloped cable network areas DMAX was broadcast from 6:30 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. on the analog frequency of NRW.TV, so that the evening program of NRW.TV could not be received in these areas. In the developed areas, on the other hand, the North Rhine-Westphalian cable network operator Unitymedia took over the analog frequency for its information channel from 12:30 to 14:30. Digital broadcast was uninterrupted. Since February 1, 2009, NRW.TV has broadcast the majority of its programs in 16: 9 format. On May 24, 2009, NRW.TV broadcast the closing service of the European Youth Day 2009 of the New Apostolic Church . For this it was the first broadcast of a festival service in Europe.

Before June 1, 2008, “NRW.TV Fernsehen aus Nordrhein-Westfalen GmbH & Co. KG” was owned 50% each by Ralf G. Neumann, a long-time partner in BBDO , and Karl-Ulrich Kuhlo , the founder of n-tv . After June 1, 2008, the WAZ Group, today Funke Mediengruppe , held 24.9%. The remaining shares were held by Nema Holding GmbH (16.98 percent), Kuhlo Holding GmbH (37.55 percent) and the managing director of NRW.TV Ralf G. Neumann (20.57 percent). At the beginning of 2014, Helmut Thoma (RTL founder) joined NRW TV with 24% and took over the management in April 2014. He introduced the interactive youth program NIX TV (Mon-Fri) and feature films on weekends.

In March 2016, NRW.tv filed an application to open insolvency proceedings. On May 10, 2016, the insolvency administrator announced that broadcasting would be discontinued because no buyer could be found for the station. However, the station could still be received in the Unitymedia cable network. During this time, the program consisted of a mixture of repetitions of the old programs, new episodes of Gamesnight.TV and teleshopping. The station logo disappeared after a while. On January 8, 2018, Unitymedia switched off the station.
