The NSU 5/15 PS compressor was the first car that Neckarsulmer Fahrzeugwerke Aktiengesellschaft built only for racing. The racing model was developed from the 5/15 hp production model and built between 1923 and 1925.

technology

The engine was a four-cylinder in- line engine with a displacement of 1232 cm³ (bore × stroke = 70 mm × 78 mm), which was equipped with larger valves and a Roots compressor . In addition, it had a higher compression than the engine of the production model and developed between 40 hp and 50 hp (29–37 kW) at 4000 rpm. The engine had pressure circulation lubrication and magneto ignition with automatic ignition adjustment. The crankshaft had three bearings. The power was transmitted to the rear wheels via an oil bath multi-disc cone clutch, a separate four-speed gearbox with center shift and a cardan shaft . The Roots compressor was driven by the gearbox. The bevel gears of the final drive were spiral-toothed. The wheelbase of the car was 2650 mm, its track width was 1250 mm and its weight: 510 kg. The top speed was around 125 km / h.

Races

In 1923 and 1924, NSU used the racing car in races at the AVUS in Berlin . The 5/15 HP compressor always won in its class. In 1923, cars of this type even took the top three places in the “small car class”. In 1924 there was a double victory in the AVUS small car race. Average speeds of 120 km / h and top speeds of 125 km / h were achieved.
