Nancy Jane Currie-Gregg (born Nancy Jane Decker on December 29, 1958 in Wilmington , Delaware ) is a former American astronaut .

1980 Currie Gregg received a Bachelor in Biology from Ohio State University , in 1985 a Master in safety engineering from the University of Southern California and in 1997 a doctorate in industrial engineering from the University of Houston . She served in the United States Army for 22 years . There she received training as a helicopter pilot and was then a pilot trainer herself at the US Army Aviation Center.

Astronaut activity

Nancy Currie Gregg came in 1987 as a flight simulation engineer for the Shuttle Training Aircraft to Johnson Space Center NASA. She applied unsuccessfully for the 12th astronaut group, but was selected in January 1990 as an astronaut candidate with the 13th group.

STS-57

On June 21, 1993, Currie-Gregg took off on the space shuttle Endeavor for its first flight into space . The main objective of this mission was the recovery of the European Retrievable Carrier Satellite ( EURECA ). In addition, the Spacehab was on board for the first time to carry out various experiments. During the space exit of two fellow astronauts, Currie-Gregg operated the robot arm of the space shuttle.

STS-70

On July 13, 1995, Currie-Gregg took off on the space shuttle Discovery on its second mission ( STS-70 ). The main task was to deploy the TDRS-G relay satellite .

STS-88

On December 4, 1998, Currie-Gregg flew to the International Space Station on the Endeavor space shuttle . The task of this mission was to connect the second section, the US connection node Unity , with the first Russian module Zarya , which is already in space, and thus to put the space station into operation. Currie-Gregg operated the robotic arm during assembly work. In addition, two smaller satellites were deployed, one of which is Argentine .

STS-109

On March 1, 2002, Currie-Gregg embarked on the fourth maintenance mission of the Hubble Space Telescope on the Columbia space shuttle . Hubble was equipped with a new energy control unit, improved solar panels, the new Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS) and a cooling system for the Near Infrared Camara and the Multi-Object Spectrometer (NICMOS). Once again, Currie-Gregg was responsible for operating the robotic arm, this time to capture the Hubble telescope and to support her colleagues with a total of five space exits.

Private

Nancy Currie-Gregg is third married to Timothy R.Gregg. She has a daughter (and a granddaughter) from her first marriage to Richard J. Sherlock, and from her second marriage to David W. Currie she has no children.
