Nasyr Abdul Al-Khabyyr

Nasyr Abdul Al-Khabyyr (born September 5, 1958 in Hull , Québec , Canada ) is a Canadian jazz musician ( percussionist ) and music teacher.

Life

Nasyr Abdul Al-Khabyyr is a son of Sayyd Abdul Al-Khabyyr . He graduated from Berklee College of Music . He graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in jazz composition and arranging. During his studies he received three awards from the Canada Council for the Arts: The Buddy Rich Jazz Masters Award in Berklee , a Roy Haynes Scholarship in Berklee and a Berklee Tuition Scholarship . He played with his father in the band Dizzy Gillespies . In 1989 he joined with his father in the film A Night in Havana - Dizzy Gillespie in Cuba on . He was also featured in Dizzy Gillespie: A Night in Chicago . He later went on tour with Oliver Jones and played on the recording of the album Just Friends . In the 1990s he played in various clubs in Montreal . Since 1995 he has taught drums at Vanier College and Concordia University . His students include Adam Passalacqua, Jean-Philippe Fortier, François Pelletier, Anthony Pageot, Josh Trager, Robbie Kuster, Jim Doxas, Marie Isler, Eric Boudreault, Jules Pampena and Harvey Bien-Aimee. He played several times at the Montreal Jazz Fest , including with Oliver Jones and the Montreal Symphony Orchestra , Time Capsule and Kenny Garrett . In 2004 he performed with bassist Alain Caron and took part in the Final Drummer Kombat concert series with Guy Nadon and Paul Brochu (like Caron, former members of the Quebec-based band Uzeb ). In 2008, Nasyr Abdul Al-Khabyyr founded a drum camp . Co-lecturers at the camp are Denis Chambers , Mike Mangini  and Horacio Hernández . The Canadian filmmaker John Walker (* 1952) shot the documentary A Drummers Dream about the camp .

Nasyr Abdul Al-Khabyyr is a valued musician in live performances and studio recordings. He is a brother of the trombonist Muhammad Abdul Al-Khabyyr .
