Al-Hajj Sayyd Abdul Al-Khabyyr (born March 22, 1935 in New York City as Russell Linwood Thomas ; † February 15, 2017 in Montreal , Québec , Canada ) was a Canadian saxophonist, clarinetist, flautist, composer, music teacher and imam . He played both jazz and contemporary music . He is the father of the well-known jazz musicians Nasyr Abdul Al-Khabyyr and Muhammad Abdul Al-Khabyyr .

Life

Al-Hajj Sayyd Abdul Al-Khabyyr studied clarinet and saxophone in New York City with Cecil Scott and others. In 1954 he went to Montreal with the trombonist Snub Mosley . Here he worked with Al Cowans until 1955. He later directed his own formation with which he performed in nightclubs in Montreal. In 1957 he went to Ottawa . Here he played in various ensembles until 1970, including in the Canadian Jazz Quartet with pianist Richard Wyands , bassist Wyatt Ruther and drummer Doug Johnston, in the Ottawa Saxophone Quartet and in various studio and dance bands under the direction of Champ Champagne, Buster Monroe and others. From 1959 to 1963 and 1963 to 1965 he directed his own orchestra at Gatineau Country Club . In 1970 he returned to Montreal and taught at the University of Montreal until 1980 . His students included Jennifer Waring, Chris Place, Mary-Jo Rudolf and Rémi Bolduc. During this time he also gave concerts of contemporary music. He played with the ensemble of the Société de musique contemporaine du Québec [Society for Contemporary Music Quebec], the Ensemble L'Infonie by the Canadian composer Walter Boudreau (* 1947), the Duo Dionne-Bregent, consisting of the Canadian composers Michel-Georges Brégent (1948–1993) and Vincent Dionne (* 1942), and the TRIO 3. He worked in the studio and in theater orchestras.

From 1971 to 1978 he played jazz regularly in his own Café Mojo, first with the percussionist Dido, later with his sons Ameen on flute and percussion, Nasyr Abdul Al-Khabyyr on drums, Muhammad Abdul Al-Khabyyr on trombone, and Zayd on Piano. In the 1980s he alternated between Montreal and New York. From 1980 to 1982 and 1987 he was a member of the Duke Ellington Orchestra under the direction of Mercer Ellington . In this group he made a guest appearance at the Jazzfest Berlin on November 5, 1987 in the Berlin Philharmonic . From 1983 to 1987 he accompanied Dizzy Gillespie on his international tours. In 1989 he joined with his son Nasyr in the film A Night in Havana - Dizzy Gillespie in Cuba on . With the Savoy Sultans , Illinois Jaquet , the Afro-Asian Jazz Ensemble and the Charli Persip Superband he played in concerts and made recordings .

At the Festival International de Jazz de Montréal , he gave several concerts with his sons and other musicians . On July 12, 1981, he played the opening act with the title Mingus Dynastie, a homage to Duke Ellington . Mingus Dynasty , Mike Richmond , Clifford Jordan , Sir Roland Hanna and Kenny Washington played music .On July 4th 1984 in the concert Voyage dans l'histoire du Jazz he played with Makoto Ozone , Muhammad Abdul Al-Khabyyr, Stan Patrick and Ron Di Lauro and on July 7th 1984 in the concert Sayyd Abdul Al-Khabyyr with Oliver Jones , Muhammad Abdul Al-Khabyyr, Ron Di Lauro and Eric Lagacé. On July 6, 1986, he played the opening act entitled Une soirée Montréal Tout-Étoiles avec Dizzy Gillespie. It played alongside Abdul Al-Khabyyr and Dizzie Gillespie Vic Vogel , Jon Ballantyne and his son Nasyr Abdul Al-Khabyyr. On June 30, 1994 he played two concerts with his two sons Nasyr and Muhammad under the title Abdul Al-Khabyyr Family Reunion. On June 26, 2011, there was a concert entitled A Tribute to Sayyd Abdul Al-Khabyyr with the band Time Capsule, Kenny Garrett and Nasyr Abdul Al-Khabyyr.

In 1971, under the influence of Malcolm X and Muhammad Ali, he converted to Islam and became an imam, in the course of which he also changed his name. He was buried in the Rideau Memorial Gardens cemetery in Dollard-des-Ormeaux , Québec on February 17, 2017 .
