Nat Finkelstein

Nat L. Finkelstein (born January 17, 1933 in Brooklyn , New York City , † October 2, 2009 in Shandaken , New York ) was an American photographer , photojournalist and book author . Finkelstein was best known in the 1960s for his photographs from Andy Warhol's Factory .

Life

Finkelstein learned photography from Alexei Brodowitsch , the art director of Harper's Bazaar . He initially worked as a photo journalist for the photo agencies Black Star and PIX , for which he mainly reported on the political development of the various New York subcultures . He made his first exhibitions in 1963 in the Fifth Street Gallery and in 1964 in the famous artists' meeting place Cedars Bar. From 1964 Finkelstein joined the Warhol Factory, of which he was a member for three years. His photographs of the Warhol entourage in the legendary “Silver Factory” are among the best known of their time and, thanks to their photo-documentary value, have become a kind of cult symbol .

In 1968 Finkelstein designed the artist book The Andy Warhol Index together with Warhol . Finkelstein's work can be found in the collections of well-known museums and galleries around the world, including the New York Metropolitan Museum of Art , the Whitney Museum of American Art , the Andy Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh , the Victoria and Albert Museum , the Tate Modern and the Saatchi Gallery in London, in the Stedelijk Museum , Amsterdam , in the Center Georges Pompidou in Paris and in Germany in the Museum Ludwig in Cologne , as well as in various private collections. Finkelstein's artist books are coveted collector's items.

Finkelstein's photo essays are still printed in various publications such as Time , Life , Sports Illustrated , Vogue , The New York Times Magazine , Rolling Stone or in the London Times . 2006 Finkelstein published together with David Dalton the biography Edie Factory Girl about the Warhol muse Edie Sedgwick .
