biography

Early Life and Service in Ukraine

Natalja Poklonskaja was born on March 18, 1980 in the settlement of Mychajlivka , in Voroshilovgrad Oblast (now Luhansk Oblast ). Later, in 1990, her family moved to Yevpatoria in Crimea. Poklonskaja graduated from the University of Internal Affairs there in 2002. She then worked in the Ukrainian public prosecutor's office , where she initially worked as an assistant to the incumbent prosecutor of the Republic of Crimea. From 2002 to 2006 she was the assistant prosecutor in the Krasnogwardeisk district and from 2006 to 2010 the assistant prosecutor in Yevpatoria. Between 2010 and 2011 she was the deputy head of a law enforcement unit of the Ukrainian Public Prosecutor's Office , which dealt with organized crime .

In 2011, she acted in Simferopol as a prosecutor in the court case against Ruwim Aronov, a former member of the Crimean Parliament and a former functionary of the Tawrija Simferopol football club , who was a member of an armed gang called Bashmaki, (lit. the " Stiefel ”) and the commissioning of murders committed with extreme cruelty. In the same year she was appointed Simferopol's Inner District Environmental Prosecutor. As a result, she was transferred to the Ukrainian General Prosecutor's Office in Kiev , where she worked as a senior prosecutor.

From October to December 2012, Poklonskaya worked as the chief prosecutor during the judicial proceedings of the Crimean Court of Appeal and later from December 2012 to March 2014 as the chief prosecutor of the second department of the General Directorate of Internal Affairs involved in pre-trial investigations and the management of public prosecution with surveillance of policing is involved in criminal proceedings.

On February 25, 2014 Poklonskaya submitted her resignation referring to the demonstrations of the Euromaidan . The declaration of withdrawal was not accepted. Instead, she was given leave of absence, left Kiev and went to the Crimea, where her parents lived. In Simferopol, Poklonskaya offered to help the Crimean government.

Prosecutor General of Crimea

While the de facto regime of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea sought independence from Ukraine, Poklonskaya was appointed Prosecutor General of Crimea on March 11, 2014, a newly created position. Poklonskaya was offered the position by Sergei Aksyonov after the position was reportedly rejected by four male prosecutors, including former Crimean deputy prosecutor Vyacheslav Pavlov. In response, the Ukrainian government opened criminal proceedings against her and revoked her rank as counselor.

Immediately after her appointment as prosecutor, she was involved in the investigation into members of the Berkut who were accused of bodily harm. On March 19, Poklonskaya confirmed that there was an investigation into a shooting in Simferopol that reported two victims, while she denied that the perpetrator had already been caught. Comparing the shooting to the " sniper attacks on Maidan Square in Kiev " from February 18-21 , she said she believed the shooting was intended to "violence between the military forces of Ukraine and Ukraine." to provoke the Crimea. "

On March 18, Crimea was formally annexed by Russia. On March 25, Russia confirmed that Poklonskaya would remain in her role as Prosecutor General of Crimea. On March 26, Poklonskaya was listed as a wanted criminal on the website of the Ukrainian Ministry of Internal Affairs for violating Article 109, Section 1 of the Ukrainian Criminal Code. Poklonskaya himself described the manhunt to a Russian newspaper as “an example of the filthy politics, blackmail and pressure” of the Ukrainian government. On March 27, the Russian General Prosecutor Yuri Chaika Poklonskaya awarded the rank of Supreme Rights Advisory Council. On April 4, 2014, Poklonskaya gave the Russian FSB permission to begin an operation in which Yalta prosecutor's assistant Yevgeny Pomelov was arrested as part of a major bribery case. On April 11, 2014, the Prosecutor General of Russia Poklonskaya personally handed over her official documents, which marked her as a legal officer of the Russian Federation. This decision was ratified on May 2, 2014 by a decree of the Russian President Vladimir Putin .

After demonstrations against an entry ban for Mustafa Dzhemilev , chairman of the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar people , Poklonskaya threatened on May 5, 2014 with the dissolution of the Mejlis and with the initiation of criminal proceedings against the demonstrators.

On May 12, 2014 Poklonskaya was added to the list of people on whom the EU imposed sanctions. Canada also imposed sanctions on Poklonskaya at the end of June 2014 .

On July 5, 2014, Poklonskaya met the chairman of the mejlis of the Crimean Tatar people, Chubarov, on the border between Crimea and Ukraine, and read him a warning about "extremist activities" he was accused of. As a result, he was denied entry to the Crimea for five years. On July 20, 2014, Maria Vladimirovna Romanova bestowed the Order of St. Anastasia on a private ceremony in the Church of the Protection and Intercession of the Virgin Mary in Moscow 's Izmailovo district in the eastern Poklonskaya district . On July 28, the Japanese Foreign Ministry published a list of persons sanctioned in the wake of the crisis in Ukraine, including Poklonskaya.

On August 27, 2014, Poklonskaya filed an application for compensation payments to the central district court on behalf of over 200,000 private investors in Crimea. The background to this is the refusal of Ukrainian banks to repay the money saved from the accounts of the residents of Crimea.

Member of the Russian Duma

In June 2015 Poklonskaya was promoted to the rank of Judicial Council 3rd class (equivalent to major general ). In July 2015, there were reports that it might be run for the 2016 Duma election. She was elected to the 7th convocation of the Duma in September 2016 and then submitted her resignation, which Vladimir Putin corresponded on October 6. She performed additional activities in the Duma:

  • Chairwoman of the State Duma Commission for the Control of Reliability of Information on Income, Assets and Obligations of Representatives of the State Duma ,
  • Deputy Chairwoman of the Duma Committee on Security and Anti-Corruption and
  • Member of the State Duma Commission to Review Federal Expenditure on Defense of the Russian Federation, National Security and Law Enforcement .

Her vehement action against the film Matilda caused a sensation , the film adaptation of an affair with the last Tsar Nicholas II , whom she considers a saint and in whose miracle activity she believes beyond the grave. It went so far as, after the Public Prosecutor's General Prosecutor rejected a ban, to write a separate legal opinion and to label the actor Lars Eidinger because of his roles as a porn actor.

In July 2018, Poklonskaya was the only member of the United Russia parliamentary group to vote against the government's planned pension reform, which is relatively unpopular among the population. The party leadership then applied for exclusion from the party, which, according to Western observers, should end their political career in Russia.

Private

Poklonskaya is divorced and has a daughter. Her hobbies include playing the piano and painting. Her parents are both pensioners who live in the Crimea and their two grandfathers died in World War II , while only their grandmother survived the German occupation. In March 2014, Poklonskaya said she intended to apply for Russian citizenship.

Internet phenomenon

After her appointment, Natalia Poklonskaya held a press conference. Since her appearance was reminiscent of the ideals of beauty and stereotypes of female manga characters , she became an internet phenomenon . A video of the press conference without subtitles was uploaded from a Japanese YouTube channel. The video was viewed more than 300,000 times in one day. Soon after, it was also a topic of conversation on forums like Reddit , Weibo and the Russian Vkontakte .

Countless fan arts , mostly manga-style, have appeared on the internet. It has been reported by both Russian media such as Voice of Russia and RT, and international media such as BBC News and Bloomberg News .

When Poklonskaja was asked for her opinion on fan arts during an interview, she replied that her daughter was very happy about these drawings, but that she herself was rather indifferent to this topic. In her opinion, public figures are often drawn and this is just part of it.

In Crimea, tourists are offered souvenirs with a manga-style image of Natalia Vladimirovna Poklonskaya.
