Sodium iodate is a chemical compound (more precisely the sodium salt of iodic acid ) from the group of iodates . It is a light, air and moisture sensitive, colorless and odorless solid.
Occurrence
Of course, sodium iodate comes in some minerals and compounds e.g. B. as an admixture in Chile nitrate .
Extraction and presentation
Sodium iodate can be made by reacting a sodium- containing base such as sodium hydroxide with iodic acid :
It is also possible to display it by reacting iodine with a hot sodium hydroxide solution:
properties
Sodium iodate is an oxidizing agent . It crystallizes in the orthorhombic crystal system with the lattice parameters a = 5.75 Å , b = 6.37 Å and c = 4.05 Å. A monohydrate and a pentahydrate are known of the compound.
use
Sodium iodate is used as a preservative in the food industry and as an additive in iodized table salt .
