Sodium methoxide should not be confused with sodium ethoxide ( molecular formula C 2 H 5 NaO).

The compound is produced via the reaction of methanol with elemental sodium or with sodium hydride . Besides arises molecular hydrogen .

properties

Sodium methoxide is a strongly hygroscopic white solid. This is very reactive and for this reason is usually only handled and stored in solution . At temperatures above 50 ° C there is a risk of self-ignition in air.

It is a very strong base that reacts violently with water and acids .

use

Sodium methoxide is used as a base, for example for the deprotonation of CH-acidic compounds. Alternatively, lithium methoxide can be used.
