Nature reserve Wacholderheide Kihlenberg

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The nature reserve Wacholderheide Kihlenberg is a 4.7 hectare nature reserve (NSG) west of the village of Kruberg in the municipality of Kirchhundem in the Olpe district in North Rhine-Westphalia . In 1938 and 2004, the Arnsberg district government designated the area as an NSG by ordinance. The 1938 expulsion was one of the first NSG expulsions in Westphalia . Four hectares of the NSG have also been designated as FFH area Wacholderheide Kihlenberg (DE-4913-302) since 2004 .

Area description

The juniper heather lies on the ridge of the Kihlenberg. The NSG is a juniper heather with dwarf shrub heaths. The vegetation is characterized by a mountain juniper heather rich in wireweed . The junipers usually reach a height of 2 to 3 m and in places form an almost impenetrable bush. There are small and larger, juniper-free areas interspersed with it, which are mostly dominated by the wire smear. In large areas, however, heather and blueberries also dominate. The heather is interspersed with older individual trees. The individual trees are deciduous and coniferous trees. In the southwest of the NSG there is an old, stately row of hat beeches above an unpaved path , some of which have already died out. In the NSG at the edges there are also light oak forests.

Protection purpose

According to the nature reserve designation, the area was designated as a nationally significant juniper heath with rare and endangered as well as landscape-typical animal and plant species as a nature reserve. As with all nature reserves in Germany, the protection designation pointed out that the area became a nature reserve “because of the rarity, special character and beauty of the area”.
