The Nederlandse Programma Stichting came into being on January 1, 1995, when it took over the tasks of the Nederlandse Omroep Stichting (NOS) to broadcast cultural, informative, minority and youth programs. Until 2006, the NPS broadcast television programs primarily on the channel Nederland 3 , after a program reform that affected all programs of the NPO , they were also broadcast on the other two channels. The chairman of the NPS was Roger van Boxtel, who is also a member of the Democrats 66 party . The general director, Willem van Beusekom, died on May 21, 2006. He was succeeded by Joop Daalmeijer.

According to the plans of the Jan Peter Balkenende II cabinet , it appeared that the NPS would have been dissolved in 2008. One of the reasons given for this was that the non-affiliated NPS (unlike other Dutch broadcasters) would not have fitted into the new system that the public broadcasting cabinet had in mind. Due to the collapse of the governing coalition " Balkenende II ", however, these plans were discarded and the NPS was not dissolved.

In 2006 the NPS broadcast the series “Fok jou!”. In this fact-based drama series consisting of five episodes, a perfectly normal 14-year-old girl takes to the street, later in the juvenile detention center. The main role in this series is played by Rosita Wolkers, granddaughter of the writer Jan Wolkers .

Teleac ( Televisie academie ) was founded in 1966 as an educational broadcasting company. In 1996 it merged with NOT ( Nederlandse Onderwijs Televisie ; founded 1962)

RVU was founded in 1930 as Radio Volksuniversiteit by Bond van Nederlandse Volksuniversiteiten . The main points of the radio, which only broadcast television programs from 1983 and thus renamed itself RVU educatieve omroep , were attitude to life, ideology and religion; the programs were considered stimulating.

In accordance with the Dutch Media Act, NTR produces an extensive program through which cultural and ethnic minorities can reach their members. One example is the “Lijn5” program, which tries to reach the urban youth subculture .

Another well-known series produced by NTR is Dunya & Desie (previously NPS), which is about two girls from different backgrounds. The series won many awards and was broadcast in Germany by ZDF .

The program also includes the popular children's programs Sesamstraat and Het Klokhuis. The latter format is also popular with adults because of its mixture of questions of knowledge and sketches and is remotely comparable to the program with the mouse .

NTR also holds the rights to the US series Six Feet Under .

On September 6, 2010, a few days after NTR started broadcasting, the new news program Nieuwsuur , a cooperation between NOS and NTR , started on Nederland 2 . It is the successor to NOVA / Den Haag Vandaag , a program with background reports on world events. The show ran for the first time in 1992. The name NOVA (Latin “new”) is a portemanteau from NOS and VARA , the responsible institutions. After its founding, NPS also joined in 1995. In contrast to NOVA , Nieuwsuur also brings the latest news and sports reports.
