Nelly Merz

Nelly Merz , also Nellie Merz (born on February 28, 1876 in Frankfurt am Main ; died on July 12, 1968 there ) was a German opera singer ( soprano ).

Life

Nelly Merz first studied singing with Dr. Hoch's Conservatorium in Frankfurt am Main and then four years in Geneva and Milan . She then made her debut at the Stadttheater Krefeld in 1913 . After an engagement at the German Opera House in Berlin from 1915 to 1918, she was a member of the ensemble of the Bavarian State Opera of the National Theater in Munich for almost thirty years . In addition, she also had appearances at the Vienna State Opera and guest appearances on other German theaters.

During this time she sang under the direction of conductors Richard Strauss , Bruno Walter , Wilhelm Furtwängler and Hans Knappertsbusch .

As an opera singer, she sang more than 25 first roles and won in particular the roles of Chrysothemis in Strauss' Elektra (1930), Elisabeth I in Rossini's Elisabetta regina d'Inghilterra , Sieglinde in Wagner's opera Die Walküre , Desdemona in Verdi's Otello , Senta in Wagner's The Flying Dutchman , the title roles in Franz Lehár's Eva and Verdi's Aida, and the Myrtocle in Eugen d'Albert's opera Die toten Augen .

In addition to the performances in the Wagner roles, she also impressed in guest performances in Mozart's artistic singing as well as in the singing of lieder and oratorios .

She was a married Gerke or Gehrke and after the end of her career (around 1945) gave singing lessons in her hometown of Frankfurt / Main.
