Appearance

Rear view of the Neptune Fountain, in the background the Palace of Justice

In the middle of the basin built by Oswald Bieber , which is 30 meters long and 15 meters wide , the figure of Neptune created by Josef Wackerle rises. Neptune is shown with a trident and his tunic over his shoulder next to a fish-tailed steed that brought him to the surface of the water in a victory pose. This powerful appearance of the hero with the muscular build is underlined by the water-spouting tritons surrounding him . The group of figures is additionally supplemented by a fountain that rushes out at intervals on the horse's stomach; In addition, several thin rays fall from the shells into the large basin. The fountain is surrounded by flower beds and benches.

history

The Old Botanical Garden was laid out in 1804 - 1814 by Friedrich Ludwig von Sckell . The existing entrance portal to the Old Botanical Garden was created by Emanuel Herigoyen . The Glass Palace , which was built in 1854 for the First General German Industrial Exhibition , but fell victim to a fire in 1931 , was also located on the site .

In the following years 1935–1937, the park was redesigned by Oswald Bieber and Joseph Wackerle on the orders of the National Socialists . A large part of the soil and trees from the renovation work for the parade area of the NSDAP on Königsplatz was reused here. In addition, a coffee house was built in the axis of Arcisstraße at the northern end of the park, today's “Parkcafé”, which adapts to the style of the former party quarter with four huge pillars facing the street . In the northeast area of the park the art pavilion used for exhibitions was built, in the southeast area the Neptune Fountain, aligned with the central axis of the Palace of Justice .
