The nestlings ( Nidularia ) are a genus of mushrooms from the mushroom relatives family . The genus belongs to the group of belly mushrooms .

features

The small fruiting body is initially sack-shaped and spherical, and finally opened in a bowl-shaped manner. It has no closing membrane ( epiphragma ). The shell ( peridia ) is thick, made up of one layer and cream to cinnamon in color. When ripe it tears open with an irregular crack. Spore packages ( peridioles ) are numerous. When ripe they are brown. They are not connected to the peridia by a mycelial cord ( funiculus ).

The spores are ellipsoidally shaped, smooth, hyaline and thick-walled. The shell ( peridia ) consists of thick-walled, thorny hyphae . The hyphae septa do not have buckles . The basidia are slender, two- to four-pored and have no basal buckle. There are no cystids .

Generic delimitation

The crucibulum ( Crucibulum ) and the cyathus ( Cyathus ) have peridiola with Funiculus . Mycocalia has a white peridia made up of normal, non-thorny hyphae. The fruit bodies are also significantly smaller. Since they are often less than 1 mm in size, the genus does not belong in principle to the large mushrooms .

ecology

The nestlings grow as saprobionts on moist branches and pieces of wood lying on the ground, including tree stumps as well as on the ground trunks of deciduous and conifers. Often they appear to be sitting directly on the floor.

Systematics and types

The nestlings used to belong to the nestling relatives (Nidulariaceae) within the now also obsolete order of the nestling-like (Nidulariales). The genera it contains are now counted among the mushroom relatives . The genus includes up to 3 species in Europe, North America and Australia, of which only the stuffed nestling ( Nidularia deformis ) occurs in Europe .
