The German-language first broadcast of the series has been broadcast in double episodes since January 14, 2019 on the Austrian ORF and March 6, 2019 on the German broadcaster VOX . In February 2019, NBC announced that the series would be renewed for a second season.

The series follows Dr. Max Goodwin, who becomes Medical Director of one of the oldest public hospitals in the United States, with the goal of overcoming bureaucratic hurdles in order to provide exceptional care to patients.

The series is based on the book 'Twelve Patients: Life and Death at Bellevue Hospital' by Dr. Eric Manheimer, who himself was medical director for 13 years at Bellevue Hospital, which serves as the template and location for 'New Amsterdam'. The Bellevue, current name is 'NYC Health + Hospitals / Bellevue', is the oldest state hospital in the USA, founded on March 31, 1736. It is located in Manhattan on the east side of First Avenue between 26th and 28th streets in the Kips district Bay on the East River .
