Career

society

Dumitru's career began in 1945 in his hometown near Sparta Bucharest . After a year in Divizia B , he moved to local rivals Metalochimic Bucharest in 1947 , with whom he was promoted to Divizia A in the 1947/48 season . There he had to relegate with his team in the 1948/49 season , but was given the opportunity to move to Dinamo Bucharest . In the following years Dinamo became a top club and fought for the championship, which Dumitru could win once in his playing career - in the 1955 season. He stayed with the club until the end of his career in 1959.

National team

Dumitru played a total of eight games for the Romanian national team between 1953 and 1955 . He made his debut on June 14, 1953 in the World Cup qualifier against Czechoslovakia . He was used under national coach Gheorghe Popescu in three of four qualifying games, but did not make it to the finals in Switzerland with his team. He then stayed in Popescu's squad, which subsequently only played friendly matches, as there was no European championship between the world championships. On October 9, 1955, he came to his last assignment against Bulgaria .

Trainer

After the end of his active career, Dumitru was in the summer of 1959 Traian Ionescu's assistant coach at Dinamo Bucharest . He also stood by his successor Constantin Teașcă before he inherited him in March 1962 and became Dinamo's head coach for the first time. At the end of the season he led his team to win the title. In the season 1962/63 he was with his club after 13 games at the top of the table when Traian Ionescu inherited him and Dumitru again became his assistant. He had initially also Ionescu's successor this role Angelo Niculescu held before he took over in 1965 Dinamo's second team of the year, as Dinamo Bucharest Victoria in Divizia B played.

In the summer of 1967, Dumitru became head coach of newly promoted again Dinamo Bacau in Divizia A . After relegation in 1968 he led the club to fifth place at the end of the 1968/69 season . He then got another opportunity to take over Dinamo Bucharest. In the second half of the 1970/71 season he again had to stand behind Traian Ionescu when the club won the championship. In the summer of 1972 Dumitru was finally replaced by Ion Nunweiller .

Dimitru went to Ghana in 1973 and became national coach . After failing to qualify for the Africa Cup in 1974 , they parted ways and returned to Romania, where he succeeded Nunweiller as Dinamo's head coach in early 1974. After the championship in 1975 he was again replaced by Nunweiller in March 1976. Dumitru took over the SC Bacau for the second time, which he was able to lead twice to stay in the class.

In 1981 Dumitru was the assistant coach of Valentin Stănescu at Dinamo, whose successor he was in the summer of 1982. The following two years were his most successful time at Dinamo. After the championship in 1983 he and his team won the double of championship and cup in 1984 . At the same time he moved into the semifinals of the European Cup , where the team was eliminated against the eventual winners Liverpool FC .

After this success, the ways of Dumitru and Dinamo parted, who went to SC Bacau for the third time. With the club he was able to hold the class twice before he succeeded Ion Nunweiller in the summer of 1986 at league rivals AS Victoria Bucharest . With his new club he was able to finish the season 1986/87 in third place and qualify for the UEFA Cup . There his team was eliminated in the second round against Dinamo Tbilisi . Third place could be repeated in the 1987/88 season .

In the summer of 1988 Dumitru moved to FC Argeş Piteşti , and after a year they parted ways. At the beginning of the 1991/92 season he was the head coach of Dacia Unirea Brăila , but was dismissed after two months and replaced by Ionel Iuga .
