Nicolaus Dedelow

Nicolaus Dedelow (* 14th century or 15th century in Hamburg , † after April 23, 1485 in Greifswald ) was a Catholic theologian and university professor.

Life

Nicolaus Dedelow, who probably came from Hamburg, began studying at the University of Rostock in April 1427 , where he received his bachelor's degree in 1429 and his master's degree in 1432/1433 . Nothing is known about his subsequent stay and his activities.

In the summer of 1458 he was accepted into the artist faculty of the University of Greifswald and was its dean several times in the following time . In 1461 he became bacc. theol. and gave lectures in the theological faculty. He was a canon and cantor of the collegiate monastery at St. Nikolai Cathedral .

In the winter semester of 1462/1463 Nicolaus Dedelow was vice rector of the university, while Swantibor (1454–1464) of Pomerania held the honorary rector's office. After the murder of Greifswald's mayor Heinrich Rubenow on New Year's Eve 1462, riots broke out in Greifswald. It is not possible to determine whether Dedelow belonged to one of the contending parties. During the plague epidemic in Greifswald in 1464, he went to Magdeburg , where he was canon and lector secundarius (second preacher) at the cathedral chapter .

At the end of 1469 he returned to Greifswald, where he now increasingly turned to theology. Dedelow was licentiate in 1476 and doctor of theology in 1480. In 1474/1475 and 1480/1481 he was rector of the university and in 1481 its vice-chancellor. In March 1481, during his second term as rector, there were physical attacks on the Camminer Bishop Marinus de Fregeno . The Italian bishop was installed by Pope Sixtus IV and hated by the population for collecting the Turkish tax and the indulgence trade , while Dedelow and the mayor Nicolaus Schmiterlow were among his supporters. In the dispute over the introduction of new forms of teaching based on the model of the University of Paris in the artist faculty, he and Schmiterlow supported the Collegium minor, which rejected the changes . From the settlement forced by Duke Bogislaw X. 1484 to Anklam , Dedelow's party emerged as the real winner.
