Location of Niesen in Willebadessen

Niesen is a district of Willebadessen in the district of Höxter , North Rhine-Westphalia . The place lies in the valley of the Nethe and was mentioned for the first time in 1273.

The place name Niesen apparently goes back to the name of a castle " Nyhusen " (New House), after which the knight family von Niehausen named themselves. In 1262 a Johann von Niehausen was first mentioned in a document. The family ruled the surrounding villages as feudal bearers of the Neuenheerse monastery . After 1515, the villages of Luthadessen, Mengersen, Rottersen, Swerdessen and Wippelfört, which belonged to the office of Niesen, were destroyed by war.

An old moated castle was rebuilt in 1555–1558, and today's village of Niesen was built near it in the 16th century.

In 1704 Niesen Castle was renovated as a baroque mansion. After the von Niehausen family died out, it was owned by those von Bocholtz from 1728 to 1911 , who had the remains of the medieval castle demolished. In 1912 the property came to the barons of Vittinghoff-Schell . Since 1964 until today it has been inhabited and managed by the Barons von Elverfeldt .

Until it was incorporated into Willebadessen on January 1, 1975, Niesen was an independent municipality in the Peckelsheim district .
