Life and accomplishments

Nikolai Gorlow, as his year of birth z. Partly also stated in 1908, was the son of the locksmith Matwei Dmitrijewitsch Gorlow († 1943), who worked for years in the tram depot "NE Bauman" and was there most recently the position of chief master. Gorlow's mother († 1921) was a housewife. He had four siblings, his two brothers Alexander and Michail died in the German-Soviet war .

Gorlow graduated from school in 1928 and worked for a time in the milk combine Молокосоюз ( Molokosojus ). At the same time, he attended an art school and was taken over as an artist by the Moscow tram company in 1929. It was through this position that he came into contact with the theater and developed a preference for amateur performances . In 1935 he graduated from what is now the Chekhov Art Theater in Moscow , but remained at the Theater der Straßenbahner , later the Lenin Komsomol Theater (or Lenkom Theater ), until 1939 . Well-known productions with his participation were Poverty Is Not a Vice by Alexander Ostrowski , The Living Corpse by Lev Tolstoy and an adaptation of Nikolai Ostrowski's How Steel Was Hardened .

In April 1945 Gorlow also began to appear at the Moscow State Theater of Cinema Actors , but had to interrupt his activities there from November 1948 due to illness. He then took part in concerts and was part of an acrobatic ensemble in the Central Culture House of the Railway Workers . From May 1954 until the liquidation in February 1957 he was seen again at the Moscow State Theater of Cinema Actors , including in Victor Hugos Angelo , Evgeni Schwarz ' The Ordinary Miracle and in The Mandate of Nikolai Erdman .

Gorlow made his film debut in 1937 in Дума про казака Голоту ( Duma pro kasaka Golotu ), a production of the Soyuzdet film studio , with which he had been under contract since October 1939. After further small roles, he was seen in 1940 in The First President , a biopic about Yakov Sverdlov . Shortly afterwards he gave the older brother of the main character in Alexander Rous The Wonder Horse . As a result of the war, Gorlow was evacuated to Tbilisi , where he worked for the local cinema studio from 1941 to 1945. A film from this creative period that has also been shown internationally is Malachow Hill (1944). After the war he continued his career in Moscow and Leningrad , but his popularity was already beginning to decline. 1957 ended Gorlow's contract with Mosfilm , so that he continued his career as a freelance artist.

Gorlow had a reputation for being an expert on folk, humorous characters. Until shortly before his death he appeared in over 140 films, including four times directed by Leonid Gaidai . In 1976 Gorlow gave his only leading role in Золотая речка ( Solotaya Retschka ), in the same year he appeared in Марк Твен против ... ( Mark Twen protiw ... ), a film about the author Mark Twain . Another biographical work was the Soviet- Yugoslav coproduction Лев Толстой ( Lev Tolstoy , 1984). Historical films , including works such as Teheran 43 and Ulenspiegel , made up an important part of his work alongside comedies , but he was also seen in novel adaptations such as The Idiot (1958) and The 12 Chairs (1971). Furthermore synchronized Gorlow a character in the animated short film  Сердце храбреца ( Serdze chrabreza , 1951).

He had held the title of Honored Artist of the RSFSR since June 15, 1987 .

In his second marriage, Gorlow was married to Klawdija Grigoryevna Fradkina (1911-1987).

He died at the age of almost 78 in his Moscow apartment, where he lived alone. His body was only discovered a few days later, so the time of death had to be determined by an autopsy . Gorlow's urn was placed in his wife's grave in Danilov Cemetery . Few relatives and friends, but none of his former colleagues, attended the funeral.
