Count Nikolai Georg Eduard Totleben (Тотлебен Николай Эдуардович; born February 11, 1874 in Saint Petersburg , † February 4, 1945, presumably in Halle ad Saale ) was a German-Baltic nobleman , Russian count and major general of the Imperial Russian Army .

Origin and family

Count NE Totleben came from the noble noble family Totleben . He was the son of the general engineer Franz Eduard Graf Totleben (1818-1884), who had been raised to the rank of Russian count in 1879, and Elise von Hauff (1833-1907). Nikolai Totleben married Olga Gauger (1878–1976), they had four daughters, and with him the male line of the count family died out.

Life

His military career began in 1891 with training in the 2nd Cadet Corps . On 4 August 1892 he was promoted to officer cadet and served in an infantry - battalion . With promotion to lieutenant in 1894 he moved to the bodyguard of a sapper -Bataillons. In 1898 he was promoted to lieutenant and in 1901 to captain . In this rank he was a battalion adjutant . In 1905 he was promoted to company commander and in 1913 to colonel . Thus he was used as the deputy battalion commander of the 26th Sappeur Battalion. In 1914 he took over command of the 26th Sappeur Battalion. In 1917 he was discharged from the Imperial Russian Army, with all honors, as Major General.
