Karl Woldemar Nikolai Vasilyevich Baron von Medem ( Russian Николай Васильевич фон Медем ; born October 25, jul. / 5. November  1795 greg. In Genitschek ( Lithuania ); † February 24 jul. / 8. March  1870 greg. In Saint Petersburg ) was a Baltic German - Russian general of the artillery and university professor .

Life

Von Medem, from the von Medem family in Courland, began his service as a junker in the Guard Artillery on horseback in 1813 . He fought in the Sixth Coalition War in the Battle of the Nations near Leipzig and in the battles near Brienne , Arcis-sur-Aube and Fère-Champenoise . In the following Battle of Paris he was promoted to Praporschtschik .

In 1823, von Medem as a staff captain on the 1820 by Grand Duke Michael , founded Artillery School in St. Petersburg reassigned to military science teaching. In 1826 he became inspector of the classes at this school in the Colonel rank. In 1827 he married Marija Mikhailovna nee Balugjanskaja (1804-1894). In 1932 he became professor of tactics and military art history at the new Nikolaus Military Academy in St. Petersburg . He developed a teaching program and set up a tactical exercise with Ludwig von Seddeler . In 1833 he was appointed to the chair of strategy , history of campaigns and military literature and promoted to major general. In his strategy lecture he dealt with all known authors from Henry Lloyd to Carl von Clausewitz . His lecture on military history dealt with the wars from the Thirty Years' War to the 1815 campaign . In 1834 he became a member of the military academy for life and appointed the chief director of the page and cadet corps . In 1836 he published an overview of the well-known strategy rules and systems, for which he received half the Demidow Prize in 1837 . In 1837 he published a two-volume guide to tactics, for which he received the full Demidow Prize in 1839. Together with Ossip Senkowski , he edited the six-volume military library from 1838 to 1840 . In 1845 he became lieutenant general .

In 1848 von Medem became chairman of the military censorship committee . The Order of St. George followed in 1856 . In 1858 he was given a foreign command to prepare a report on the military-scientific institutions in Europe. In 1860 he became a member of the main censorship administration and chairman of the St. Petersburg censorship committee. In 1862 he became a member of the Council of the Interior Ministry (until 1865). In 1864 he became general of the artillery and chairman of the main committee for military science. In addition, he was the main supervisor of military science classes in the military science institutions of Russia .

Von Medem was buried in the cemetery of the Pskov-Pechorsk Assumption Monastery in Pechur .
