The Nikolaikirche , occasionally also Nicolaikirche , in Gardelegen in the north of Saxony-Anhalt is assigned to the brick Romanesque and Gothic . It is dedicated to St. Nicholas , the patron saint of merchants and seafarers. After it was damaged in World War II, it was only partially rebuilt. It has not been used sacred since 1977.

history

In the place of today's church there was probably a wooden mission church from the Carolingian era , which was consecrated to St. Stephen . Today's church was built around 1200 as a Romanesque brick building with a transverse west tower. The builder was Heinrich von Gardelegen , who lived at Gardelegen Castle from 1186 to 1192 . Conversions and extensions in the Gothic style were later carried out : in 1420 the construction of the choir began ; the nave was rebuilt as a hall church at the end of the 15th century , and the tower was changed after 1500. Until the Reformation , the Nikolaikirche was the main church in Gardelegen. From then on it was used by the Evangelical Lutheran community. In 1596 the church received a new pulpit . At the end of the 18th century the church was so dilapidated that demolition was considered, but Gardelegen citizens advocated restoration.

Towards the end of the Second World War, on March 15, 1945, the church was badly damaged by bombing by the Allies . The choir was used as an emergency church for several decades . In 1977, however, the structural condition of the church was so poor that it was divested . Restoration work did not begin until 1991, when the spire was re-covered. In 1993 the "Association for Culture and Monument Preservation Gardelegen and Surroundings" was founded, which had repairs and additions made to the church on its own initiative. In 1995 cultural events took place in the church choir for the first time.

Architecture, equipment and use

Nikolaikirche from the west

The tower and the choir have been preserved from the church; of the former three-aisled, four-bay nave, only the outer walls and inside the round pillars with flat services stand . The choir consists of four yokes with five-eighths ending . There are two-part pointed arch windows between the buttresses . The long choir has a beamed ceiling with a civic coat of arms from the early 16th century. There are vaults only in the end of the choir and in the eastern roof. In the northeast corner is the von Alvensleben family crypt . On the north side is the sacristy in the transverse rectangular choir side nave, which has two bays and is as high as the choir.

Only the altar table and - in the high choir - wall paintings from the late Gothic period have survived from the original furnishings ; other parts of the furnishings were taken over from the Gardelegener Marienkirche .

The 54 meter high tower is divided by pilaster strips . It can be climbed via a wall staircase. At the height of the nave cornice was the bell storey, the coupled arched sound openings of which are walled up.

The "Association for Culture and Monument Preservation Gardelegen and Surroundings" used the church for choir and instrumental concerts as well as for tours and exhibitions. The former nave is intended as a " lapidarium " to house tombstones and architectural objects from Gardelegen. A tour of the church is possible.
