from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Nikolaus von Münsterberg (also: Nikolaus der Kleine ; Polish: Mikołaj Mały Ziębicki ; * between 1322 and 1327; † April 23, 1358 in Hungary ) was Duke of Münsterberg from 1341-1358 .

Life

Nicholas came from the Silesian branch of the Piasts . His parents were Duke Bolko II of Münsterberg and Jutta († 1342), widow of Duke Matthew IV of Trenčín.

After the death of his father Bolko II in 1341, Nikolaus took over the government of the Duchy of Münsterberg. Since his father recognized the Treaty of Trenčín concluded in 1335 with the Treaty of Straubing on August 29, 1336 and Münsterberg thereby became a Bohemian inheritance , Nicholas paid homage to the Bohemian King John of Luxembourg and his son, Margrave Charles, on August 24, 1341 in Prague IV. On August 14, 1343, Nicholas sold the town of Zobten to Bolko II of Schweidnitz. Since Nikolaus took on huge debts from his father and the duchy had lost large estates through pledges and sales, Nicholas had to undertake to the Bohemian royal family on October 14, 1343 never to sell or pledge his duchy of Münsterberg. In the event that he were forced to sell, he granted the king a right of first refusal and even if he did not have male descendants, his duchy should fall to the Crown of Bohemia .

In 1343 or earlier, Nikolaus married Agnes von Lichtenburg († 1370), whose parents are said to have been Heinrich Schleb von Lichtenburg ( Hynek Žlebský z Lichtenburka ) and Agnes / Anežka, daughter of Wilhelm von Landstein .

During his reign, the city of Münsterberg entered into an agreement in 1344 to persecute robbers and highwaymen. In the same year, Duke Nikolaus gave the city the highest court and in 1348 also jurisdiction over the Jews.

In 1355 Nicholas accompanied the now Bohemian King Charles IV to his imperial coronation in Rome. Nicholas then stayed in Prague for some time and did not return to Münsterberg until 1356. In 1357/1358 he went on a pilgrimage to the Holy Land . On the return journey he died in Hungary on April 23, 1358. His body was transferred to Münsterberg and then buried in the family crypt of the Heinrichau monastery.
