Johann Nikolaus Freiherr von und zu Bodman (born February 23, 1903 in Bodman , † October 25, 1988 in Radolfzell - Möggingen ) was an ornithologist and nature conservationist, who came from the former noble family Bodman .

Life

Bodman was born as the younger son of Count Othmar von und zu Bodman and his wife, Countess Maria, née Countess von Walderdorff , on Shrove Monday of 1903 in Bodman Castle . His older brother was Dr. Johannes Graf von und zu Bodman.

After attending elementary school, Bodman came to the school boarding school in Ettal Abbey in Bavaria in 1915 , the grammar school in Ravensburg and, until 1924, the Stöckle pedagogical school in Bad Wörishofen , where he passed the school leaving examination. He then studied until 1931 at the University of Bonn and the agricultural universities of Bonn-Poppelsdorf and Hohenheim .

From April to June 1927 he went on a research trip with the director of the Museum Alexander König , Prof. Dr. Adolf von Jordans , to the Balearic Islands and worked in 1928/29 as an intern on an agricultural estate owned by Count Brühl in Kolho near Cottbus .

In 1932 Bodman took over the management of the Möggingen moated castle near Radolfzell. - His grandmother, Countess Maria von Walderdorff, née Countess von Rechberg and Rothenlöwen , acquired the former rule of Möggingen in 1900 and bequeathed it to her grandson Nikolaus through her daughter.

In 1935 Bodman married Monika Leopoldine Antonia Josepha Huberta Maria, Countess von Spee (1907–1992) and had three sons with her:

  • Johann Wilderich Maria Othmar Hubertus, Baron von Bodman (born December 12, 1936 in Möggingen am Mindelsee ; ∞ Maria-Claudia, Freiin von Stotzingen)
  • Johann Othmar Mariano Hubertus, Freiherr von und zu Bodman (born June 24, 1939 in Möggingen am Mindelsee; ∞ Utta Lauffs)
  • Johann Konrad Franz Hubertus Maria, Freiherr von und zu Bodman (born October 13, 1941 in Möggingen am Mindelsee; ∞ Christiane Becker)

From 1941 to 1945 Bodman did his military service in France .

Four days after his death, on October 29, 1988, Bodman was buried in the family crypt in Möggingen .

natural reserve

In addition to his professional activity, Bodman was strongly committed to nature conservation, in particular to the protection of the bird world. In 1928 he was with Kurt Floericke co-founder of the " Süddeutsche Vogelwarte " and its chairman from 1931 to 1938. After its dissolution he set up the "ringing of Baden and Wuerttemberg" in his moated castle in Möggingen as a kind of branch of the Ornithological Rossitten , which he after she became homeless, she took up there in 1946. The station was then continued as the “ Radolfzell Vogelwarte ” on Lake Constance and as the Max Planck Institute for Ornithology.

Another achievement of Bodman is the establishment of numerous nature conservation and landscape protection areas on Lake Constance, for example on the Höri and Bodanrück . He also campaigned for the protection of the shores of Lake Constance from over-development. The Constance District Administrator Ludwig Seiterich , with whom Bodman worked closely, implemented corresponding ordinances in ordinances.
