Nimbuzz is a communication software that is available for Windows , macOS , various smartphones and platform-independent as a web application . It offers instant messaging , presence information and VoIP over several instant messaging networks and social networks , for example the VZ networks . XMPP , however, is no longer supported.

The beginnings

Nimbuzz was founded in 2006 by Evert Jaap Lugt and Martin Smink. In an initial round of financing, the company received US $ 10 million from various investors on May 19, 2007 . In a second round of funding, Nimbuzz received an additional $ 15 million.

Nimbuzz is headquartered in Rotterdam , the Netherlands. Additional offices are located in São Paulo , Brazil, Córdoba , Argentina and New Delhi , India.

The company has users in every country around the world. In 2008 the company was chosen as one of 100 winners of the “Red Herring 100 Global” industry award.

Functions

Instant messaging

Nimbuzz enables communication via Windows Live Messenger , Google Talk , Yahoo Messenger and AIM as well as via the social networks Facebook , Myspace , Hyves , Gadu-Gadu , Orkut and Giovani . Due to the renewal of the SchülerVZ , StudiVZ and MeinVZ platforms , access to their services is temporarily not possible.

Nimbuzz also provides XMPP - Transports willing to XMPP-enabled instant messengers such as Miranda IM or Pidgin can be used, but Nimbuzz allows access only to their own XMPP server.

Presence information (display of whereabouts)

  • Geo location
  • personal message
  • Status settings
  • Profile picture

Phone calls

phone book

  • Saves the contacts in the Nimbuzz contact list
  • Access to the cell phone contacts

Data security

As with all XMPP transports , the access data for third-party providers, i.e. the user name together with the password, must also be stored online on a server at Nimbuzz. This in fact makes it possible for the account to be misused.

Nimbuzz Mobile

The Nimbuzz Mobile application is currently available for over 1,000 mobile phones that run on Symbian OS or Android or are equipped with Java ME . Devices from Apple ( iPhone ) (currently not available in the App Store) and Blackberry are also supported. The software was offered for Windows Mobile until June 2010.

The application offers various telephony options, including IP telephony via Session Initiation Protocol (SIP). Support for Skype was discontinued in October 2010 at the request of Skype Technologies .

Nimbuzz widgets

In order to benefit from the Nimbuzz widgets, one must have either Nimbuzz PC or Nimbuzz Mobile installed.

Nimbuzz Communicator

The Nimbuzz Communicator is a widget that is activated when a user sets up an account. It enables anyone to make free phone calls, chats, send data, send voice messages, offline messages or the buzz to the widget owner. This function can optionally be switched off.

Nimbuzz Ringtone Factory

The Ringtone Factory Widget enables users to create individual ringtones or audio files by uploading and editing a music file up to a maximum of 15 MB. The trimmed audio clip can then be sent immediately to Nimbuzz Mobile's online gallery. Registration via the widget is possible.
