The Nonnenfließ is a sand and clay shaped lowland river in northeast Brandenburg and a right-hand tributary of the blackness . It is approximately eleven kilometers long and has a drainage area of approximately 89 square kilometers.

Via Schwärze and Finow Canal , the Nonnenfließ is part of the Oder catchment area . It is only minimally polluted by municipal wastewater and is no longer subject to any economic use. Its water is moderately polluted.

course

The Nonnenfließ rises south of Tuchen , a district of Breydin in the Barnim district , and maintains a roughly northerly direction of flow up to the mouth. It flows past the former New Mill, takes up the Trampegraben on the right side of the former Schönholzer Mill and flows two kilometers before the confluence past the Liesenkreuz, where the Brennengraben flows into it. In the Eberswalde district of Spechthausen , the Nonnenfließ unites with the blackness. The confluence of the two bodies of water has been dammed into a mill pond since the 17th century.

geomorphology

The nuns flow came into being around 15,000 years ago. It flows through a meltwater channel that was created at the end of the Vistula Ice Age and has its source in a broken forest and moorland area. The deep incision of the Nonnenfließ in the Barnim plateau creates an almost mountainous landscape. The river meanders strongly and has typical impact and sliding slopes as well as spring moors . Sections with high flow velocities and sandy or gravelly subsoil ensure a high oxygen content and a strong self-cleaning effect.

Flora and fauna

Due to geomorphology and water quality, fauna and flora are very species-rich both in the water and in the surrounding area. In Nonnenfließ to rare fish species such as find bullhead , brook lamprey and loach . The valley of the Nonnenfließ is one of the few locations in Brandenburg where the Wald-Bingelkrauts or the Ährigen Teufelskralle are located . Rare birds such as woodcock and stock dove can be found here .

Protected areas

The Nonnenfließ was first placed under protection in 1977. In 1996 the "Nonnenfließ-Schwärzetal" nature reserve was created. It is embedded in the conservation area Barnimer Heide and in the nature park Barnim .

Human influences

Some traces of earlier use are still present. Old artificial flow obstacles such as dams and stone chutes at former mills and fish ponds are gradually being removed in order to make the river completely passable. The most complex problem is the avoidance of the fall at the former paper mill in Spechthausen. The measures are intended to further increase structural wealth and biodiversity. In addition, a thematic circular route will be created.

Trivia

According to a legend, a nunnery is said to have stood by the river, which was torn down by a flood. The only surviving nun erected a cross on what is still called the Elies Cross or Lies Cross today. The nuns' flow is said to be named after her.
