The film was released in German cinemas in 2012 as the original with German subtitles.

The film is about the boy Pim growing up with his mother, who falls in love with his best friend Gino.

action

The boy Pim lives with his mother Yvette in a run-down house somewhere on the Belgian North Sea coast. Yvette works as an accordion player in the Texas village pub . At a younger age, Pim sneaks into his mother's room, who was once the village's beauty queen, and puts on her sash and tiara. Gino, who is two years his senior, lives in the neighborhood with his mother Marcella and his sister Sabrina. Marcella becomes something like Pim's second mother, Gino his close friend. Shortly before Pim's 15th birthday, the two of them masturbate in front of each other in a garage and Pim picks up the handkerchief Gino used. He also keeps other memories that are important to him like treasures in a small box, such as his mother's sash and diadem.

When Yvette and her friend Etienne go to a concert, Sabrina invites Pim to stay with them overnight. At Gino's suggestion, the two boys spend the night in a tent on the beach. This is the first time they kiss and have sex. When Gino turns 18, he buys a motorcycle and regularly takes Pim with him. The two continue to deepen their relationship, but keep it a secret. When Gino began to drive to De Panne after a while, the boys became increasingly estranged. Finally, Pim learns from Marcella that Gino is now living in Dunkirk with his girlfriend Françoise . This news throws him into a phase of great loneliness, which he tries to overcome by drawing, his escape from everyday life. When he can watch Gino with Françoise through an open window, he clogs the exhaust of Gino's motorcycle with the handkerchief from his "treasure chest". As a result, however, he only becomes more depressed.

Sabrina tries to get closer to Pim because she secretly has feelings for him. But he does not respond to them and leaves them standing. Later, by chance, Sabrina comes across Pim's drawings. One of them shows Gino with a naked torso. Sabrina is then hostile towards Pim. Meanwhile, Yvette is leaving her partner Etienne, because he has attacked her. When the young showman Zoltan, who already lived with Yvette many years ago, comes back with the circus, he rents a room with her again. She is very interested in the attractive young man, but Pim is also attracted to Zoltan and tries to watch him in the shower.

Pim is now almost 17 years old when he receives a phone call from Gino in the middle of the night. They then meet on the beach and Gino urges Pim to spend his time with Sabrina; their relationship years ago was just a game. When Pim reveals to him that he is planning to leave town with Zoltan and the circus, Gino seems to get jealous; When confronted with this, he denies having ever loved Pim, which is why the latter angrily knocks him to the ground and runs away. Some time later, Pim surprises his mother with Zoltan during sex and then quickly leaves the house. When he returns in the morning, he finds out that his mother ran away with Zoltan and left him alone and penniless, as he was only a burden for her.

Marcella takes Pim in. He is allowed to move into Gino's former room, much to Sabrina's displeasure. Some time later, Marcella, who has kidney disease, has to go to the hospital. In her last breath, Marcella brings Pim's and Gino's hand together, then she dies. Now Pim feels completely alone; he burns his "treasure chest" and runs naked into the sea while he recites the alphabet. After Marcella's funeral, Pim and Sabrina live together in the house and begin a friendly relationship again. Sabrina has taken over her mother's job. One day while she is at work, Gino comes to visit. He declares that he is coming for Pim. The two make up again and end up in a passionate embrace.

It is (after several short films ) Defurne's first full-length feature film. More than 200 test recordings had to be scheduled for the casting of the male leading actors, as many of the young actors were afraid of a "gay role" or their parents forbade them to play the role.

The film opened in Belgian cinemas on March 16, 2011. It was released in German cinemas on May 10, 2012 as the original with German subtitles; the DVD release followed on May 31, 2012 and the Blu-ray release on September 24, 2013, distributed by Edition Salzgeber . The film was also released in France , the United States , the United Kingdom and the Netherlands and screened at various international festivals.

reception

Noordzee, Texas was generally rated positively. The Rotten Tomatoes review collection has an 80% positive rating based on 25 professional reviews.

Henry Barnes of The Guardian judged that the film was beautiful to watch, had brilliant acting, but was difficult to grasp when Pim slipped into a dream world. Allan Hunter spoke of a "small, delicate, heartwarming film" in the Daily Express . The LGBT newspaper Bay Area Reporter judged that Defurne's “opulently filmed scenario” was reminiscent of “a fairyland by the sea” and described the Texas restaurant as “particularly impressive”, which gave the film its “geographically paradoxical title”.

The film-dienst judged that the film told “in an innovative and personal form a timeless story of happiness and confusion”, which it succeeded in achieving “despite some weaknesses as calmly poetic as tenderly melancholy”. Cinema described the film as "gentle and powerful at the same time"; he is reminiscent of “American road movies and the early Wenders ” and he succeeds “in an almost magical way” in touching the audience through beauty.

Ignatiy Vishnevetsky compared the film to the director's earlier work and asked why Campfire was captivating while North Sea Texas was “often boring”. He explained that Defurne had presented a full-length feature film for the first time after a large number of short films, but did not manage to develop the characters or the plot in the additional time.

Lars-Christian Daniels von Filmstarts awarded two and a half out of five stars and judged that the coming-of-age drama “impresses with its sensitive staging and expressive young actors”, but “lacks narrative clout”; the film is "nice to watch over long stretches", but offers "not much more than pretty packaging, behind which there is little substance".
