Former Collegiate Church of Notre-Dame-de-l'Assomption

The former Catholic collegiate church Notre-Dame-de-l'Assomption in Crécy-la-Chapelle , a parish in the Seine-et-Marne department in the French region of Île-de-France , was built in the mid-13th century in the style of Gothic built. In 1846 the church dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin was added to the list of architectural monuments in France as Monument historique .

history

Already in the 12th century there was a chapel on the site of the current church , which was subordinate to the Abbey of Saint-Martin-des-Champs in Paris . In 1202 the bishop of Meaux , Anseau de Garlande , raised it to the parish church and founded a collegiate monastery with eight canons there . From 1220 a new church was built and the Assumption of Mary was consecrated. The first four yokes of the nave were largely destroyed during the Hundred Years War and rebuilt in the 15th century. In 1429 the church was consecrated by Bishop Jean de Briou. In 1676 the collegiate monastery was dissolved. In the 17th and 18th centuries, floods raised the ground by up to three meters and caused severe damage. In 1994 the church was closed for security reasons. An extensive restoration of the church took place from 2005 to 2006 and has been open to the public again since September 2006.

Exterior construction

Tympanum of the west portal

In the north of the west facade rises the bell tower, horizontally structured by cornices and reinforced by buttresses at the corners that are stepped on several times . The west facade was badly damaged by the floods. From the tympanum of the west portal only four fragments have been preserved on which the Coronation of the Virgin , her Assumption and St. Martin , who shares his coat with a beggar, can be recognized. The largest fragment depicts the Adoration of the Magi and the Archangel Michael , who weighs souls. The relief panels are dated to the middle of the 13th century.

Interior with a view of the choir

The nave has three aisles and extends over six bays . In the east it opens to a wide choir , to which two smaller chapels adjoin on both sides. A transept there is not. The elevation is three stories. The pointed arcades of the central nave rest on mighty columns, the capitals of which are carved with heads and foliage in the two eastern bays , which date from the 13th century. A triforium with double three-pass arches runs over the arcades and continues in the choir. Oculi are incised in the arch spandrels . The choir, pierced by large windows, is covered with an unusual, twelve-part ribbed vault.
