The Catholic parish church of Notre-Dame-de-l'Assomption in Droyes , a commune in the Haute-Marne in the French region of Grand Est , built in the 11th century. The nave and the west facade of this Romanesque church have been preserved. The church was partially rebuilt in the 16th century. The church still has stained glass windows from this period . In 1914, the church dedicated to the Assumption of Mary was added to the list of architectural monuments in France as a Monument historique .

history

In the Middle Ages, the church belonged to the Benedictine abbey of Montier-en-Der, seven kilometers to the west . Originally, the church was also dedicated to St. Nicholas of Myra . After the renovation of the transept and the choir in 1647, the church was probably given its current patronage .

Exterior construction

The west facade is structured by strong buttresses and broken up by five arched windows. The arched portal, covered with simple archivolts, is embedded in a roofed wall projection. It has an unadorned tympanum , the capitals of its columns are decorated with stylized leaves.

The bell tower rises above the crossing . He is like the choir and the nave with slate covered, the aisles and the transept arms with bricks covered. The sacristy is built on the north side of the choir .

The three-aisled nave is divided into five bays . Five wide arched arcades , which rest on strong, rectangular pillars , open to the two aisles. Instead of capitals, the pillars are decorated with profiled transom plates . The central nave walls are broken through on both sides by five arched windows that illuminate the interior. The central nave has a flat wooden beam ceiling, the wooden ceilings of the side aisles are bevelled.

A two-nave transept adjoins the nave, which barely protrudes over the nave. Like the choir and the polygonal apse, it is covered with a ribbed vault. Numerous keystones are carved with angels, saints and the evangelist symbols.

Renaissance window

  • Window 5: Legend of St. Nicholas

The window shows episodes from the legend of St. Nicholas . It dates from the middle of the 16th century.

  • Window 6: Root Jesse

The Wurzel-Jesse window is dated with the year 1548. Only the upper part of the lancets and the tracery remain of the window . It was heavily restored in the 19th century.

  • Window 7: Stoning of St. Stephen

The window depicting the stoning of St. Stephen dates from the middle of the 16th century. It was restored by Erdmann and Kremer in 1863.
