Novi Slankamen ( German (outdated): Neu-Slankamen , Cyrillic Нови Сланкамен , Hungarian Újszalánkemén ) is a place in the Opština Inđija , in the Serbian province of Vojvodina . Novi Slankamen is located east-southeast of Novi Sad . Novi Slankamen was founded in 1783. Slankamen means salt stone in German .

The Serbs made up 79% of the population, the Croats 15.7%, the rest are minorities of Yugoslavs , Montenegrins , Roma , Magyars , Slovaks , Slavic Macedonians , Russians , Ukrainians and Czechs . 2 Danube Swabians also live in Novi Slankamen.
In 1991 the proportion of the Croatian population was 65.6%. After many threats from Serbian extremists, most of the Croatian population fled during the Croatian War . Between October 26th and 30th, 1992, 1,600 people (mostly Croatians) left the Roman Catholic parish in Novi Slankamen.
Few politicians in Serbia have identified these events in Slankamen, Golubinci and Hrtkovci as ethnic cleansing . In 2002 the proportion of Croats was 22%.
