The Vistafjord (later in service under the names Caronia and Saga Ruby ) was a cruise ship that was last operated by the Saga Shipping Company until January 2014 .

history

Service as a cruise ship

The Vistafjord was built at the British shipyard Swan Hunter Shipbuilders in Wallsend with hull number 39 and was delivered to the Norwegian shipping company NAL Den norske Amerikalinje (Norwegian America Line) on May 15, 1973 . This operated it together with her older sister ship Sagafjord in the global cruise program.

In May 1980, both ships were transferred to the subsidiary NAC Norwegian American Cruises . From 1981 to 1982 the Vistafjord was known to a wide audience as the “ dream ship ” on German television.

In October 1983 the NAC was taken over by the shipping company Cunard Line , and the Vistafjord was launched together with the Sagafjord under the flag of the Bahamas . In December 1999, Cunard had the Vistafjord renovated for five million US dollars and the ship was based in Southampton as the Caronia under the British flag . It was the third ship to be given this name.

Cunard sold the Caronia in July 2004 to the shipping company Acromas Shipping , a subsidiary of the British company Acromas Travel , which finally renamed the ship Saga Ruby and operated it together with the sister ship Saga Rose , which was also renamed . After being modernized in a Maltese shipyard, the Saga Ruby left for her first cruise in March 2005. In July 2010 the ship was placed in the register of ships in Malta and remained in the management of Acromas Shipping until 2013. In the last operating year 2013/14, the ship was under the management of V.Ships Leisure . The Saga Ruby was operated as a cruise ship until the beginning of 2014 , the last voyage ended on January 9th in Southampton.

Planned use as a hotel ship and scrapping

The ship was sold for $ 14 million to Millennium View Limited (a subsidiary of a Singaporean company), which placed the ship under the management of FleetPro Ocean from Miami. It was planned to use the ship, now renamed Oasia and registered in the Bahamas, as a hotel ship in Myanmar.

In mid-2016 it was announced that the ship would be offered for sale for $ 26 million. The ship has since been in the roadstead off Sattahip in Thailand.

In March 2017, the ship was sold to an Indian scrapping yard and began its last voyage as an oasis with a destination in Bhavnagar (India), where it reached roadstead on April 4th. On April 12, 2017, the ship was stranded in Alang and subsequently scrapped.

Machine system and drive

The ship was powered by two low- speed nine-cylinder two-stroke marine diesel engines of the type Sulzer RD68, which were built under license by George Clark & North Eastern Marine and which transmitted their power directly to the two fixed propellers via shaft systems . Seven diesel generators from Bergen Diesel and Cummins as well as an emergency generator from Caterpillar were used for the on-board power supply .
