In contrast to the neighboring town of Niederschindmaas , which was first mentioned in 1237 as “Syndemannsdorff”, Oberschindmaas was first mentioned in documents in 1405 as “the upper Schindemans”. Around 1418 the place was named as “obir Schindemans”, in contrast to the neighboring town of Niederschindmaas, called “nidirn Schindemans”. In the 18th century the spelling “Oberschind Maß” is documented, but the spelling “Oberschimnitz” was also used. Only towards the end of the 18th century or in the 19th century only the current name "Oberschindmaas" occurs.

Regarding the political administration, Oberschindmaas belonged to the Schönburg dominions . The place was initially under a Schönburg vassal court , which was combined with the Saxon manor Mittelmosel in the office of Zwickau and under whose manorial rule Oberschindmaas was. In the 19th century, Oberschindmaas was under the Schönburg rule of Glauchau , Hinterglauchau . After an administrative reform was carried out in the area of the Schönburg recession in 1878, Oberschindmaas came to the newly established Glauchau administration in 1880 . In 1862 Oberschindmaas got its own school building, which was replaced by a new building in 1900.

On July 1, 1950, Oberschindmaas was incorporated into the Dennheritz community. As a result of the second district reform in the GDR , Oberschindmaas became part of the Dennheritz community in 1952 and became part of the Glauchau district in the Chemnitz district (renamed Karl-Marx-Stadt district in 1953 ), which was continued as the Glauchau district in Saxony from 1990 . In the course of the first Saxon district reform , the community of Dennheritz and its two districts came to the district of Chemnitzer Land on August 1, 1994, but not with the rest of the district of Glauchau , but to the district of Zwickauer Land , which was merged into the district of Zwickau in 2008.
