Obersteinach is a district of Ilshofen in the north-east Württemberg district of Schwäbisch Hall .

geography

The Obersteinach district is an area exclave of Ilshofen, separated by a narrow strip of foreign municipal areas. The eponymous main town Obersteinach is about 6 kilometers to the northwest from the city center. Located on the Hohenlohe plain between the deeply cut river valleys of the Jagst in the north and the Kocher a little further away in the west, Obersteinach's area extends almost to the shoulder of the Jagsttal in the north, in the east to the Wolpertshausen  - Gerabronn road (L 1037), in the South to the Altenberger branch of the Grimmbach and in the west and northwest to the deeply incised main branch of the same, which at Obersteinach itself from two source brooks that are still shallow runs together and west of the area to the Kocher.

In the slightly hilly landscape, apart from in the deep valley cuts in the west, there are only small patches of forest, the open part is mostly under the plow, because the limestone, partly still covered by thin Lettenkeuper ( Erfurt formation ) or loess layers, provides good arable soil. Where it is karst et there are sinkholes .

In addition to the largest eponymous town, the district consists of five other suburbs: Sandelsbronn close to the south-east, Altenberg in the very south-west, Windisch-Brachbach and further Niedersteinach in the west and Söllbot in the north-west, all of them agricultural hamlets . The main traffic axes are the L 1042 from Ilshofen through Obersteinach in the direction of Langenburg and also the already mentioned L 1037, in addition, some district and village streets connect the individual settlement areas of the district.

history

The district reform in 1938 incorporated the hamlets of Altenberg, Niedersteinach, Sandelsbronn and Windisch-Brachbach. In 1972 the town of Söllbot was added.

On January 1, 1972, Obersteinach was incorporated into Ilshofen.

Altenberg

Altenberg is associated with the local nobility of the Alten von Altenberg who lived there until 1480. In 1450 the hamlet received the chapel dedicated to St. Marie (from 1489 St. Margaret's Chapel), which was a subsidiary of Orlach until 1597 . In 1708 the chapel was elevated to a parish church by the Lords of Gemmingen .

Niedersteinach

First mentioned in 1477 under the name Nidern Steinach . Niedersteinach belonged, like the suburb of Altenberg, to the manor of the lords of Gemmingen . Until 1806 Niedersteinach was part of the Odenwald canton of the Franconian knight circle .

Sandelsbronn

First mentioned in 1369 under the name Sandoltesbrunnen .
