The object 19 was the development concept of a buoyant armored personnel carrier from Soviet development and one of the few armored vehicles that used wheel and chain drives. Object 19 was not a half-track vehicle , as the traction is either wheel or chain.

Development history

In the early 1960s, at the direction of the Ministry of Defense of the USSR, developments began on a series of concepts for a new armored personnel carrier that was to be introduced to the Soviet Army in a timely manner . The main requirements imposed by the Ministry of Defense included:

One of these developments was "Object 19". The development was carried out in the Altaiski Traktorny Zavod in cooperation with the Malinovsky Military Academy of Armored Forces. In 1965 the first prototype was presented and subjected to various comparative tests with other models. It turned out that the wheel-chain combination was too error-prone. The decision was made in favor of the Object 765 , which was finally delivered to the troops in 1969.

Armament

The tub of Object 19 was a welded construction made of rolled steel sheets that resembled the BRDM-2 design. In the middle was the combat compartment with the tower with the main armament, which could be rotated 360 °. A maximum of eight soldiers could leave the interior through various hatches.

The vehicle was equipped with a 73-millimeter smooth-barreled cannon (2A28) in the turret. The grenades could be loaded by a semi-automatic loading device after preselection. The rate of fire was a maximum of six rounds per minute. The effective range was 800 meters, the maximum 1300 meters. In addition, a launch rail for launching the anti-tank guided missile 9M14 Malyutka (NATO designation: AT-3 Sagger) was mounted above the cannon. A total of four AT-3s were carried in special holders in the tower. A 7.62 mm machine gun ( PKT ) was installed parallel to the axis of the cannon .

Chassis

A wheel chassis with a 4 × 4 wheel arrangement was used as the chassis. For movement in difficult terrain, a chain drive was also installed, which was located between the two wheel axles on both sides of the tub . The rollers came from the PT-76 floating tank . The changeover time from wheel to chain drive and vice versa was between 15 and 20 seconds.
